Butler finish on instrument panel

I am getting ready to have some plating done, and will include some dash panels. What is the consensus on the grain direction of the butler nickel finish, vertical or horizontal, I have seen both. First photo was done recently by a plating shop in Ft. Worth and the graining is vertical and was applied by them. Repop ammeter and switch ring stick out like a sore thumb on this panel. My poor quality photo does not show the grain but it is vertical. The second photo shows vertical grain on another panel but is many years old, showing some rust.

Would it not be possible that the small size of this part would mean that it could be hand held when 'buffing' and therefore not all panels were the same?

Jim: Did you mean mostly horizontal, but vertical around the gauge opening?

I hand held my panel. I used a sisal wheel on the copper plate going around the circumference of the panel, then horizantally across the entire face. I didnt buff out the nickel. I never noticed the vertical buff in the standards. I have also seen panels that have been laid flat on a scotch brite and dulled, again horizontal. Is the direction spelled out in the standards?

I've never seen vertical lines on an original panel. I've seen horizontal, and I've seen no lines, similar to what a smooth panel would look like if you blow your hot breath on a cold panel.

I have seen originals with no visible buffing marks. I have seen originals with horizontal marks. I have seen originals with vertical marks. I do not have photos or examples on hand. There is nothing in the "Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards" that says anything about the direction of the buffing marks on original instrument panels. If I were judging the vehicle, the direction of the marks would not enter into the score.

That being said, I have one (Mid 1928 through Mid 1930) restored to show quality, horizontal marks, available for sale and will be advertising it in the Swap Meet soon.
