Default 1939 ford 91T truck project in OZ

Hey
Now that i have moved my 39 ford truck to the family farm in the new south wales southern highlands away from the rust prone eastcoast coastline i now in the process of restoration.

One of my first items on the list is to see if this sucker is going to start. The truck is 99% complete and there is still fuel in the tank .

It was used as a wheat truck as it is fitted with a G-WELL hydraulic wheat bag lifter system at the back that runs off the PTO.

I would like some advice on the process i should carry out before starting ,like lubing the cylinders??? cleaning the inners of the sump???

I have included some pics of a lever that runs down the side of the main gear lever,i would like to know what that is for,and also the switch on the steering column???

The truck has 91T-796 stamped on the firewall ,has the key in the ignition and all gauges look to be in great condition,so i guess i need to purchase a 6 volt battery ???

Any help with answering any questions will be greatly appreciated .

Paul T

The switch on the column drop is the ignition switch. You might need to rig up something until you can mend or locate a replacement lever. Turning the key should disengage the steering lock. Lube everything up and see if you can see a plunger moving outwards away from the column as the key turns.

The separate lever to the right of the gearstick might be something to do with the grain lifter - it is probably hooked to the PTO. You can get underneath and see what it does easier than we can guess.

The small lever on the side of the gearstick is, I believe the reverse lockout.

As for the engine, lube the cylinders, rebuild (or at least clean and check) the distributor and carb and give it a try. There are many threads on here about starting an engine that has been sitting for a while.

Does the motor turn?

Judging from the front pics, the truck looks to be in nice shape.

Mart.

I agree with Mart and his comments. You might be surprised to find that the lift works well, try it when you get the engine running, if it works you can drain the fluid do so and re fill it with new. Mine sat for many years also and worked when I tried it. See my "tonners community page for details. Love to see more photos of the truck, looks good. Be sure to disconnect the speedometer cable before moving it. These things and the speedometer itself tend to freeze up after sitting a long while. Lube the cable and re-install the speedometer end and see if you can turn the cable with your fingers to make the speedometer work, if not you will have to pull that and get it un stuck.

Shifter lever is a reverse lockout. 4sp truck trans (T-8 http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/t...ruck4speed.htm ). Lever on right is for the PTO engagement. Left lever is for the parking brake. As stated above, the key only unlocks the steering and ignition switch, stitch is used to turn on power to the truck. (don't leave the ignition switch in the on position with the battery connected unless it's running, you could burn out the coil and other ignition parts)

Cool project! have fun

If the petrol in the tank is of unknown age don't use it. It can be more convenient to rig up a small gravity fed temporary tank above the engine.

I'm still learning about the trucks but on mine the lever on the gear shift is the reverse lockout (pull it up to put it in reverse) as Tinker said and pretty sure the other lever is for a PTO.

Some pics of the australian designed G-WELL wheat bag lifting system, the arm lays on the ground and has a tight strap hooked to a hydraulic lever, when the bag is placed on the strap it pulls the lever and lifts the bag up to another worker that stands on tha back of the truck ready to stack in place.

System runs off the trucks PTO

Hey, I'm new to the forum. I stumbled across your thread looking for Fordson ET6 info. How is the 91T coming along? It's a great looking truck.

I use a mixture of 50% automatic trans fluid and 50% acetone, remove all the plugs, let the pistons soak in this solution for at least a week, then place truck on level ground engage the truck in 4th gear and gently rock truck back and forth until engine turns over ever so slightly, add more solution also take off the fan belt (s) as they can rust to pulleys and you will think engine is stuck but it was the belts. great looking truck
