29 to april 30 generator
I am in the process of restoring a gen. with the ball bearing in the rear.
I got it in pieces and I cant find out what goes in the bearing pocket in the rear besides the bearing and in what order. Thanks Ed. |

Re: 29 to april 30 generator
First thing in is a spring that pushes the outer race forward, then the race. First thing on the end of the armature shaft is a dimpled steel washer, then a felt seal, another steel washer, then the bearing. I don't recall taking pictures of either one, but will look.

Re: 29 to april 30 generator
I just found these two pictures on my old computor. They may be of some help. I layed the parts out in order of assembly.
In the bearing top picture, you start at the left and lay in the front end plate the retainer, felt, and then the wavy washer. Then start at the right and assemble the parts onto the front of the armature, so you start with the bearing retainer plate, then a ring that gets squeezed with pliers into the groove, then the bearing, spacer and another lock ring. On the bottom you start at the left and assemble the parts to the rear of the armature until you install the ball bearing, then the other 3 parts get installed in the end plate, working from the right to the left, so the spring is first in. |

Re: 29 to april 30 generator
Some guys have left out all the rear parts and replaced them with a sealed bearing. I've only found one rear original bearing that needed to be replaced, and that's because it sat in a pail of water. I don't have any extra spring for the rear bearing, but Bert's might. Lately I haven't had much luck finding parts generators at the swap meets.

The generator I am fixing now, that was sold as "rebuilt" by the guy in Texas, had the felt and wavy washer left out. This lets the armature slide back and forth, and is NOT good. |

Quote:
The front bearing sets the armature location, so you WILL NEED all the parts to keep the bearing in the correct location. |
