Speedometer for 36 to S 10 tail shaft transmission?
I need to connect my 36 speedometer to my T5 transmission with a S 10 tail shaft.
Anyone know who makes that cable? |

Have you tried threading the stock '36 cable coupling onto the T5 speedo drive? The cable ends are both square and should fit as is. If none of the above work-out, your local speedometer shop can get you going easily. Let us know how it ends-up! DD

If you have the stock mechanical T5 speedo drive unit the stock Ford cable should screw right on. It can get a little tight and you may have to grind a little off the frame to clear the cable fitting.

I believe that the T5 is 7/8 18 but no one is sure what the 36 thread is. Once I find that
size I can hunt up a cable with the right ends. |

I measured a cable fitting that goes on the turtle and its 7/8 NF.When I put a T5 w/mech drive speedo tailshaft in my '36 the stock '36 cable worked.

Thanks to all. The speedometer cable for a 1936 Ford is Male, 3/4 20 and the tail shaft end is Female, 7/8 18.
If anyone knows of a speedometer cable that fits this description , Please let me know. Thanks again |

I'm sure that Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado Springs, CO can fix you up. http://www.speedoservice.com
He is on the HAMB as e1956v and is an Alliance Vendor. I recently had very positive dealings with him regarding a speedometer for my '54 Ranch Wagon. Worth a phone call, IMO 719-632-3165

Duce Lover
I spoke with the Tech guy at Dennis Carpenter and unfortunately, that part will not fit because the tranny end is 13/16 12. I need 7/8 18, female at the tranny and 3/4 20, male (1936 Ford correct male size) at the speedometer. Thanks for the try. |

Re: Speedometer for 36 to S 10 tail shaft transmission?
Just checked a 17260-B cable on ebay and its listed to fit 1930-1948 pass cars. The male threaded end of the T5 mechanical sender is the same as the males threads on the stock Ford "turtle" sender. The stock cable in my 1938 truck screwed right on the T5 sender. If you are using the T5 with a mechanical speedometer sender it should work for yours too. I believe that the differences in the different Ford cable numbers is length and cable covering but the ends are identical.
Photos of what you have would help. |

Re: Speedometer for 36 to S 10 tail shaft transmission?
Maybe I worded my need wrong so, I apologize for the confusion.
"I need to connect my 36 speedometer to my T5 transmission with a S 10 tail shaft. Anyone know who makes that cable?" The following is the information I keep getting from the usual older Ford Parts dealers. A'36 Speedometer has 3/4 20 Tread MY T5 with S 10 tail shaft has 7/8 18 tread. NOT 13/16 12 on a '36. Dick's Speedometer may make one at a reasonable price. I will give him a try. Thanks again for all the input. |

Re: Speedometer for 36 to S 10 tail shaft transmission?
The stock speedo cable should work if long enough. I have used the stock cable with a turbo 350 automatic and it worked just fine. The end that goes on the stock "turtle" should also go right on the S-10 mechanical sender. Have you actually tried the female end on the transmission? So far I have not seen anything written where you actually tried to see if it fit.

I agree with TJ .On my stock 36 speedo the cable went right on the T5 mech speedo connection.

I trust your many opinions and I am overwhelmed. In spite of what I have been told by other people who also should know, I have ordered the B17260 part. Results should be interesting.

Re: Speedometer for 36 to S 10 tail shaft transmission?
Just a note of thanks. The guys who said that the original '36 cable will work with my setup-----YOU were Right and the "experts" were wrong"
I would have posted the thanks sooner but I have been tied up with my rumble seat install and my spare tire carrier on the trunk install. Thanks for the help. |
