Default I think I broke something :(

On my way to a club meeting after work, and pow! Something broke loose, I didn't snap an axle, because it was still driving ok, but boy there's an awful noise coming out of the left rear.
Stay tuned.

No, I think thier still rattling around in the brake drum. I'm thinking either I sheared an axle key, or the brake shoe return spring broke, or part of the e-brake hardware?
First problem I have is how to get the hubcap off without bending the trim ring.

Me too! But in case of emergencies I have two spare rear axles.

If you are driving the hub with the axle key, the hub isn't tight enough. The surface area of the taper on the axle and inside the hub gives enough friction to propel the car with no pressure on the key at all when everything is up to spec. This topic isn't new here.
I would be VERY suspicious of the axle if you did shear off a key. That is how a crack begins at the inner end of the key groove. I would have it magnafluxed or die penetrant check done before I trusted it. That is IF you did shear a key.

We were on a 6 day run and on the last 3 hrs from home we had a horrendous noise from the rt rear. Found very unhelpful garages they didn't want to know . Jacked it up and pulled the drum ( oh we got the drum off easy as we had fitted F100 slide in axles 3 years before) and found the handbrake cable clip had somehow come off and cable end was rubbing on the drum magnifying the noise. So wow that was an easy fix but the noisy was LOUD.

Go on ebay and get set of those nylon? pry tools. They work very nice and no scratches.

A vintage Ford tire iron, used correctly, will not damage the trim ring.

Well, for all that noise it wasn't so bad. The ebrake lever pin clip fell off and the pieces were rolling around in there. New PRC parts!
I'll look for some old originals.
The brake springs I'm using are original as I couldn't get the darn repops to go on there.

My solution for the hubcap, a pair of Diesel engine injector removal bars.

Ralph, Glad that it wasn't anything major. It won't take anytime to get it back on the road.

Take the trim rings off first before the hub cap.

I would have, but was worried about bending them as well, thier in pretty tight.
Plus I've seen wheels that the trim rings have been on and off multiple times,
They are all gouged up. These are powder coated, but I think it would still eat them up.

You should be able to get the clips at about any autoparts store. Need to be sure that they are on good and crumped down properly.

Don't pry on the outside edge of the trim ring, pry on inside they will come of with out damage.
