Starter
My last post was about a starter switch. I rebuilt that and wanted to check the starter before I put it back on. My cables are bad and couldn’t try it so I took the starter out and brought it home. Hooked up a 6 /12 volt charger and on 6 volt it hummed loud and tripped the charger. I put it on 12 volt and it just hummed loud. Being a small charger is that enough to make it run. My questions are would you rebuild it or send it out. if it’s bad who does rebuilds and would you change the bendix to a modern one.

Re: Starter
I just use jumper cables 12volts to my 6 volt starter, lawn mower battery spun it fast.

Re: Starter
A battery and jumper cables will give you the power to test .

Re: Starter
I tested my starter with new jumper cables and it’s good. I believe my original problem was my starter switch. There was no grommet on the firewall and the starter rod went through a 1 inch diameter hole. When I went to start it I pushed on an angle and the felt tip on the end of the rod slipped out of the hole on the copper strip. One good thing I found taking out my starter is I’m missing the flywheel inspection plate. Thanks for the imput I wish I had a club near me.

If your local junior college or high school has an auto shop class, that may be a good place to seek help. The kids are pretty sharp and eager to learn. The starter will take 50 amps more or less to make it run outside of the car. Inside the car it may be 200 amps. The small charger will put out maybe 2 to 5 amps.
