Default Drain Tube Length

What is the Oil Drain Tube Length supposed to be? I'm overthinking this, but while I have it apart I'm checking everything! My car is a '28.

Maybe it is just the camera angle BUT

1. A new repro drain tube measures 4 inches end to end with 1/4 inch of threads.

2. I measured 10 or 12 used main caps with drain tubes.

They measure between 3 3/4 to 3 7/8 when installed and measured as in photo in post #2.

Early '28 cars had 5/16ths tubes later cars used 3/8ths tubes

It sorta appears that tube is spot welded in place. Maybe threads were stripped, pushed in more and spot welded?

The original style is threaded in - some new caps and rebuilders like antique engine rebuilding weld/braze their tubes in place as they are a pressfit I believe.

More important than the length is to make sure the tube is not screwed so far into the cap as to block or partially block the tube . I ALWAYS notch the threaded tube end on the side opposite the dogleg to make sure its as open as possible. The tube is not a press fit- it is threaded into the cap. Nothing wrong with a dab of braze to keep it from unscrewing.

The thing is, don't try and braze it on a good running bearing, it will melt the Babbitt.
