Default What’s the story behind these 18” wide fives?

Trying to find out some information for friend. These are ford K H 18 inch, wide five artillery wheels. I’ve had plenty of wide fives and never seen any 18 inch ones. These are dated 9 37.
I’m thinking for trucks, but not sure.

3/4 tons was wider and 60hp was narrower then std from start.
I think thoose where only aftermarket installed.
There was even a couple of different widths of them.
I seen them sold for $500 a piece...

From the '38-'39 Ford Book published by the EFV8CA:

An 18 x 4 rim, made by Kelsey Hayes, was available as special equipment for use requiring high ground clearance. When 18" wheels were installed, Spacer, 68-5021-A was also to be installed between the frame and front spring with six 60468-S Rivets.*

January 1939 Chassis Parts List, pg. 16

For cars in which the spare tire was mounted upright, the Spare Tire Mounting Bracket 78-1434 had a provision for the mounting bolt to be adjusted to accommodate the 18" High Road Clearance Wheel.

At first I was thinking aftermarket, but when he showed me the Ford script and date code I figured Ford truck. Must have been for rough farm roads of the day.
Thanks for all the info, I’ll pass it on. FYI These are 4” wide wheels.

Here’s the 1938 K-H color advertisement for these artilliary wheels. Sold as an aftermarket kit #1831 for $19.95!

Did you get the 4” measurement by going across the rim lips? The industry standard had evolved and changed in favor of measuring across the inner rim between rim lips. That should be 3.62”. Stu

I have a set of those wheels and have always been under the impression they were for higher ground clearance as stated above. When I bought them, I was told many were used by mailmen to help navigate the sometimes suspect roads of the 30's...so I've always called them "mailman wheels" for my own sake.

I've heard/read the same thing.
