Looking in the plug holes is not going to do you much good.

By any chance do you have a pan with three studs at the back of the sump? That would be a Merc pan and there is an internal baffle that the oil pickup will hang up on.

No. There are two bolts at the rear (sump) end. The pan does seem to be hanging up upon something.
When you say the throws on the crank should be up. I am thinking that you mean the "counter weights" and not the pistons should be up. correct?
This is an EAB engine. At least the heads are marked EAB.

Opps, I read your post wrong. There are 3 studs on the rear of the pan.
What's the trick in removing this pan?

Sure looks like a Merc pan to me, with three studs hanging down. If it is, then you need to drop the pan straight down at least 3" to clear the baffle.

It won't come straight down. It comes 3 to 4 inches at the sump end 1st then wedges between the front spring cross member and the flywheel.

Well, I am back to the 40 oil pan project.
It looks like if I can take the u bolts on the front spring loose an move them to the side I might gain a half inch in length. That might be enough to let the pan drop out. Does anyone for see any thing to watch or watch out for in doing that?

Well it has come down to removing the engine. I have everything disconnected now.
What would you suggest regarding the transmission? Take it out along with the engine or
leave it in the car and disconnect it at the bell housing? What should I watch/watch out for in either case?
That's ahead of time for the wisdom

I have a 50 Merc with the 50 merc oil pan in my 40. I always unbolt the transmission from the bellhousing and remove it separately.
My pearl of wisdom is this: DON'T FORGET TO REINSTALL THE THROWOUT BEARING WHEN REINSTALLING THE ENGINE(Like I did once.)
You will also need a clutch alignment tool to make sure the clutch disc lines up with the transmission splines.
You may find that you don't have to fully remove the engine, just raise it.
Take photos for documentation.

Well, I took the engine completely out of the car. Could not get it high enough to remove pan . It hung up on the oil pump. Replaced the pan seals and gasket. In the process of cleaning and painting the engine. Thanks for all the help. I will post a pic when it is all back together.

Well, it came down to pulling the engine. It was not possible to get the engine high enough to get the pan to drop off because the front of the pan at the highest point still hit the front cross member. It seams that I have a Merc engine also.
Anyway, the engine is out, the pan gasket and front seal are replaced and pan is bolted back in place. I'm in the process of painting it engine and will install it soon. (I Hope)
I will post pictures when it is ready to drive. (Summers a comen)
