Thumbs down shut off heater valve

I have a 40 ford with a 51 EAB truck engine. I want to install a shutoff valve for the heater. (it gets to hot in Georgia for a heater in the summer). It seems like the existing elbow on top of the passenger side head would be the logical place to put it. I tried to, gingerly turn it out of the head but felt like it would crush or break off.
1. Is that the correct placement for a valve?
2. What is the best way to get the old elbow out?

I went to auto zone and bought an inline heater control for 5/8" hose (cut hose to install)with a cable operated control and now I can regulate the heat as I need it.

I am pretty sure the OEM heater shut off valve was installed on the passenger side lower radiator hose at the top. I am sure someone will have a photo.

Might be a little hard to see in these diagrams, but the shut-off valve (cock) is located at the fitting on the passenger side head. These are 59a installations, no idea on the 8ba.

The valve is typically on the PS head. The coolant loop is completed with a heater hose that taps into the lower PS radiator hose.

There is a firewall mounted tube/valve unit that is cable controlled from the cab that was used in later years (my 49 F1 has this).

Can't you just mount the valve using the elbow? It should have threads to receive the valve. My 46 has this setup.

If the 51 EAB is like an 8BA I think there is a fitting for a shut-off at the water pump? I did this exact thing two days ago when I installed a stock heater in my 59AB '47 tonner PU. On the 59AB as stated, the shutoff is at the front side of the neck on the passenger side head. I used a hardware store 3/8" globe valve. 3/8" pipe nipple OD is very close to 5/8 heater hose. From what I understand, just stop the flow through the core from either end and you should be good in that Southern heat.

First of all, it would be good to know exactly what the O/P has. An "EAB" is neither a '51 or a truck engine; it is '52-'53 car. It sounds like he has a "Heinz 57" engine (mixed and matched parts), so the best thing would be photographs of the area concerned.

Opps! I am incorrect. I was thinking of the stock 85 HP engine.

Will this help? Look at these heater hose routing.

I remember that little elbow on the head can be difficult to remove as it is very tight pipe thread. Soak threads with penetrating fluid for a few days. I remember I used vise grips to make it turn a little at a time. Be gentle as it's easy to crush it. Also added a touch of heat..

Here's another good photo .

And another photo with correct valve.

don't know how stock your car is and whether you expect to open/close the valve that often but here's what i did. if you have 5/8", you can just take a plumbing 1/4 turn ball valve. solder in a couple of short pieces of 1/2" copper. cut heater hose, use two hose clamps, slide valve into the hose, tighten clamps. did mine 12 years ago, no issues.

The authentic valve was indeed installed on the right cylinder head.
If authenticity is not important to you, I'd suggest leaving the old valve (nipple?) in place for fear of damaging it and simply install an in-line valve available at any decent auto supply store.
