Default Does changing axle shafts alter the differential setting?

Hello Community,

as the title suggests, I need to change the rear axle shafts because the threads for the axle nut are severely damaged and I'd prefer for the wheels to stay on the car.
When I change the shafts (I'm not sure if I'll get new or used ones at the moment), do I need to set up the diff again or does it have no effect on the preload?
I'd guess that it doesn't matter because the bearings are supported by the housing of the differential and changing the axles would not change the preload of the differential, but I'm not 100 % sure if that's the case. So before I dismount everything again I'd like to ask someone who knows here first.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Daniel

If you use the same thickness gasket the preload should be the same as before, only one side needs to be removed----but if you find worn bearings and replace them it may require changes

I have replaced axle shafts more than once without changing anything in the setup of the ring, pinion and differential.

Axles only engage the spider gears so the ring & pinion set is not affected. Interface of the axle & spiders was preset at manufacture and requires no adjustments.

Perfect, thanks. I've already rebuilt the rear end with new gaskets because the original mounts for the shock balls were missing and new ones had to be welded on. It was only AFTER fitting the entire rear end to the car that I noticed that the axle threads were too far gone. I knew they were bad, but I just didn't double check HOW bad they were.
But with all that experience from the first time, the second time's gonna take only half as long.
