Default 1928 drive shaft removal

Hi y’all

I am trying to figure out a way to remove the drive shaft on my 1928 roadster. Any suggestions? The remover tool that is available at supply stores requires that one plate go between the 2 pinion nuts I don’t think they will work because I cannot remove those nuts so I could sandwich the plate between them.

Help...

Mike, why can you not remove the forward pinion nut?

You do have the torque tube removed exposing the driveshaft? Also to make sure we are on the same page, you do realize the puller will remove the pinion race from the differential housing where you will have access to the driveshaft nut on the end of the driveshaft.

The 2 nuts are loose but there is no way to remove them from the shaft unless you take them off the pinion end of the drive shaft which I can’t do until I have the shaft removed. Yea I have the torque tube off.

The early 1928 Model A's had a 370:1 ratio ring & pinion that are different from the later cars. The common pullers on the market will not work with these early R&P's. Unless you can make a unique puller tool, you are going to have to disassemble the differential to get it apart. See attached article.

Good catch Tom. I did not see the date in the description and assumed the obvious. But with that said, I don't believe Mike has the early R&P based on him saying the two nuts are loose.

Mike, again, ...the flat plate puller is used to remove the Pinion bearing from the Differential Housing (-some call it a Banjo housing) as a compete assembly, -which will then allow you to remove the castellated nut from the end of the driveshaft. The driveshaft end is tapered & keyed, and will generally release from the tapered internal portion of the Pinion Gear with just a few raps of a brass faced dead-blow hammer. Just install the nut loosely onto the shaft to protect the threads.

I did not know there was a difference in the pion. My car is March 1928. I wonder which I have.

Hi y’all.
Because mine is an early 28 it has the pinion, pinion nuts that are directly on the threaded shaft and it doesn’t come off as a unit, so you can’t use those pullers the sites sell because they have to be sandwiched between the nuts and you can’t get the nuts off until you have the shaft out and pinion off.

Hi y’all!!
Just an update: Finally got the drive shaft pinion, bearings and race removed from the banjo!! What a challenge. Special thanks to Steve Mitchell for steering me in the direction of the Mitchell drive shaft/pinion removal tool and renting one to me!!! Between that tool and 2 18” pipe wrenches and about 4 hours of effort..... out it came. Problem now is a getting the pinion, race and bearings off the shaft. Tried a dead blow hammer.. didn’t budge. Now I have a 10,000 lb hydraulic gear puller on it along with a dead blow hammer and yes..... it’s still not budging. This model A is teaching me patience and creativity. LOL.

Thanks to all that have offered guidance and suggestions!!!

Mike

If you heat around the the pinion case,it often makes it come out easier.
Just hear from a propanes torch. This makes it easier to put together also.

Hi y’all!!
In case anyone is interested I had to take the drive shaft to a machine shop. We put it in a lathe and had to gun barrel drill the shaft so the taper would collapse a little bit. We then put a gear puller on it and tapped on the pinion and it finally came off. I have a replacement drive shaft to use so now I can reassemble the differential!!

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
