Default 57 t bird noise

I have a 57 T BIRD that when I shift trans. in gear I get a clunk at the rear. Could that be worn ring and pinyon ?

Best thing is to lift up the rear of the car, place it on jack stands, under the rear axle or frame rails is good. Look at both u-joints, the transmission mount and the pinion flange. Also look closely at that for fluid leakage, a sure sign the seal and possibly the pinion bearing are bad. Put the transmission in neutral and check everything for play.
