Default Distributor: what is dwell angle on Dwell meter with original vs New "B" cams?

Bill Stipe,

In the "Sputter at high speed" thread you mention 9 degrees more dwell with your new distributor cam.

When I adjust distributor points for 0.020 I get a dwell reading of 44 degrees.

I am not sure if the distributor cam is stock or if a new style Stipe "B" distributor cam. But I think it is the new one.

From many years ago with stock A cams ... I seem to remember the Dwell Meter reading about 35 degrees.

Would 35 degrees be correct for stock cam and 44 for the new one?

Thanks

Your points dwell numbers sound right for the A and B cams.

I have this in my notes:

The B cam gives longer dwell time than the A cam. With a point gap of 20 mils (.020 inches), the A cam dwell was 32 degrees and the B cam was 43 degrees.

Tom and Mike,

Thank you I wondered if my meters were both bad.

The dwell can vary some, depending on the cam wear. If the lobes are worn a bit, then you will reset the points to maintain the .020" gap, and this reset will increase the dwell slightly.
