Re: gas fumess
check for leaks that may be small and that the fan is blowing it back into the car, making it an aerosol. The slower the speed the more concentrated it will be.

Well its new tank and lines, also new fuel pump and stand. What do you mean about the fan? The radiator fan?

Re: gas fumess
Check for obvious and sizable air leaks into the car. I had some holes in the firewall that were admitting lots more air than I would have guessed. It doesn't cure the problem but may lessen the symptoms.

Re: gas fumess
Well i cranked the car up and put my hand in the engine bay. Sure enough strong gail force winds blowing back towards the firewall. I assume that can be fixed?

Re: gas fumess
Put a trouble light on the engine compartment in the dark and see if you see light coming in the interior. i had a problem like that but it was an exhaust leak. Good Luck

Re: gas fumess
Find the fuel leak first, before it finds a source of ignition and you have a nice fire (make sure your fire extinguisher is readily available and servicable). "Slick Willey" suggested a small leak becoming an areosol, this seems likely and as pressurized would be from the fuel pump to the carb.

Re: gas fumess
If your problem is blowby gasses, I've found adding a PCV valve makes a world of difference. My experience is with a 4 cylinder model B, so its not directly applicable, but I drilled a hole in the side of my oil filler pipe added a grommet and installed a PCV valve. (In a 4 cylinder, the vent is also the filler). A better solution might be sealing off the oil filler cap and adding another inlet vent on the valve cover, but I found that what I did was sufficient to get rid of the smell inside the car .... a happy wife makes for pleasant touring.
I drilled a new vacuum port in the intake, on the vertical section above the carb. Originally I used a Tee off the wiper port, but was advised that I might burn a valve on #4 because of a leaner mixture there. Al |
