Engine oil temperature
I have fitted an oil temp gauge to the 33 and noticed it went as high as 92C on a long uphill pull at 50mph with the caravan on the back, the water temperature was about 85C,most times on the flat it’s about 75-80C (oil that is)
I use a quality 20/50 oil,I was thinking maybe a change to a synthetic oil? The engine in the 33 goes like a rocket ,tows VERY well and uses no oil, Am I worried about nothing? Lawrie |

Re: Engine oil temperature
Problem with too much information, gives you more to fret about! You've never been bothered by it in the past have you?

Re: Engine oil temperature
No expert here Lawrie but Im sure they check viscosity at 100c to determine it .. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Re: Engine oil temperature
Lawrie, could you advise where and how you located your oil temp sender, as I would like to fit one to my 8BA that will go into my 38 pickup. Thanks in advance.

Re: Engine oil temperature
Oil temp should not exceed 240 degs, as it begins to break down. Modern oils can take more but I'm not sure how much/ OIl must be hot near 100 c boiling water to eliminate any moisture and prevent contamination . 85 c it not too hot, could be hotter. Don't over think everything

Re: Engine oil temperature
Thanks friends,I,m sure I was over thinking this!as most know our 33 does heaps of miles, lots in temperature above 35c,with no drama,so will keep my eyes off the new oil temp gauge.
granny,I made an adaptor to fit into the other oil port on the 99A block, next to the one that have the sender in!i cut and welded the. Adaptor to make it come up vertical to clear the pressure sender, If you pm me I could see if I can get a. Pic of .it. I excelled myself and got the pic posted Also a pic of my Jerry rigged bracket for the exh tail pipe, the rubber mount failed Lawrie |

watch. On hills the oil temp would rise right away and drop as you went down the other side. The coolant temperature hardly moved. I figure the bottom of the pistons are like a frying pan heated by the fuel burnt on the top with the oil thrown up on the bottoms from the crank shaft. G.M.

Re: Engine oil temperature
When I was designing outdoor power equipment, we would have the engine manufactures do an engine application approval. Engines were put under load and run WOT for an hour. any thing under 300deg F was acceptable.

Re: Engine oil temperature
I always pre-heat oil to 190F degrees before making a pull on the dyno. Your 92C is less than 200 F and completely safe. In fact the oil is just getting to about the right temp for operation.
