Default 57 Ford brakes

My hotrodder buddy (and my benefactor from his endless parts stash) has fallen in love with a 29 A fordor he swapped for. He's now dead set on making an A for the road/touring. He's finally coming to the realization that mechanicals were superseded by hydraulics for a reason. He has no early hydraulics in his parts pile but does have the brakes off a 57 Ford and also off at least one F-1 pickup. He's already put 35 wires on the car so I think some of the F-1 stuff will fit, but what about the backing plates off the 57?

From what I have read you will have to use a very thick spacer to get the '35 wire wheels to fit. I don't have any experience using (or trying to use) the parts you referenced but since I have not read anything about it I doubt they would work. Richard Lacy at [email protected], (626) 338-2282 is probably the best person to ask. I think your friend would be better off using either '40-'48 Ford brakes or early Lincoln brakes (now reproduced, ask Richard Lacy). Dennis Cling at clingsaftermarket.com, (480) 777-1202 also does a lot of work with hydraulic brakes on Model A's. There is a ton of data in the archives here, on ahooga.con and on HAMB.

I have a Model A front end with 64-65 Falcon brakes on it. The spacers used were about 1/2". I have not taken the brakes off to see which bearings they used or how safe they are as set up. As far as the 57 brakes I have not seen them used before. Properly rebuilt and maintained mechanical brakes work good, but it is a lot of work to get them there. I have put the 40-48 brakes on afew cars for friends and they were ok. Rod
