I'm from Southern Illinois, 50 miles east of St. Louis. Nashville, Illinois is where I live. I drive an hour and a half to attend meetings in Chesterfield, Missouri. You could email each club and ask them questions about how active they are and what kinds of tours and activities they host. |

I know well where Nashville is. I was stationed at Scott AFB for three years in the late 90s. We enjoyed our time in the area. |

Re: New Ride
That Merc is outstanding! As others have provided excellent suggestions re the steering components and steering box, I will offer only this; I used STP in the steering box however, I've switched to using John Deere Corn Head Grease in the steering box and every drivetrain and suspension component that has a Zert fitting on it, on all my Flatheads

Re: New Ride
The Gemmer II steering box was a good design in that day and age. They wear more rapidly than the more modern units but generally last at least the expected 100K miles for that time frame. When you check the box for adjustment, the straight ahead centered position is the only place where the play should be minimal for this design. This is also where they tend to wear the most. If the gear gets notchy after adjusting to minimum play, there may be some pittiing wear in the center of the worm gear. If it is still smooth to rotate after adjusting, you will get a reprieve from further work and it will be good to go for the time being. John Deere corn head grease is a good lubricant for these units but with a good sector shaft seal, the heavy gear lube will work OK.

Re: New Ride
Thanks for those suggestions, gentlemen. I'm looking forward to actually getting the car and seeing what works.

When you say "this year" do you mean 2017 or yet this fall? Seems like we're pretty close to snow season.

Re: New Ride
Sorry, I meant 2017. Not sure why I thought "this year". The wife has been to the Rock Island Arsenal for training in years past.
