I'd agree that Fluke is probably the best, but for 95% of what you will be doing on your "A", checking for 6v, the el cheapo/sometimes free unit from HF is OK.
Besides, if some dimwit steals it, you arent out much.
Good Luck

A meter that has a mechanical meter movement (analog) works the best. The Model A electrical system has a lot of AC noise produced by the generator and ignition system. The AC noise causes the digital meters to "bounce around" and not have stable readings...where as the mechanical ones smooth out the noise.

Some of the more expensive digital models do reject the noise.

I use an old Triplet Meter.

Had to replace my old analog meter, battery leaked badly. Unable to find another locally, bought the digital from Radio Shack. Rewired my truck using this unit, worked just fine. No noticeable "bounce" that I could see.I too love quality tools, but sometimes you just gotta make do.

I have fluke digitals at work which don't get interference because they are quality meters.
I also use the 6.00 sperry analog found on eBay
I love using my digital power probe works great on the A systems and allows you to activate circuits by sending power and grounds etc.
Also use a basic testlight for many things also on an A

I use a fluke at work, but have used alot of those harbor freight wonder meters. Their slightly off but for a model A about all your checking is if 6V is present or checking if something is shorted or not...works great!

ive never noticed much bouncing and i use them on riding mowers or if it is slightly bouncing its not swinging wildly... im talking maybe .1V...

I like analog meters for working on these old cars when running due to the unfiltered engine noise. Digital is fine for work when engine is off which I find most of the time.
