Aaaarghh!
To my eye the Mercs are a bit ungainly. Especially the Four Door. (Coupes are all right though, Mark) Mart. |

Mart, Seeing as you like the Coupes, here is a picture of a recently imported 1939 Mercury Sedan-Coupe. |

Sales Brochure for the 1939 Mercurys. There were only four models to chose from in its introduction year, 1939. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
my dad had a 39 mercury 2dr sedan and I believe the engine was made in Canada only because the fuel pump went bad and he took it to the auto part store and they said the pump was heavy duty most likely from a Canadian bus is that possible?this was about 1950

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Mart, I feel that way about a 39 Ford Vs 39 Mercury. The Merc is "lower" and "sleeker" lines over the Ford. Although "both" grills are pretty, both horizontal and vertical grill bars look good to me!!!!

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
I just cant hold myself back about this cars before and after photos. They have made this car much better than it ever was even when new. They will pat themselves on the back for this amazing work. But they have no understanding of history and original design, or the rarety of this survivor car (until now). Brain dead I recon. Regards, Kevin.

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
1939 Mercury Town Sedan, the only body style that was sold in Australia. Here are three examples of restored Australian delivered 1939 Mercurys. While they are not common, they do turn up at Early Ford V8 Events, as you can see from these photos. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Trevor
I know you are the "hub cap" guru and I wanted to ask you "again" about 39 Merc hub caps and in particular the "full SS" caps. IF I remember correctly you posted a picture of a full SS "Mercury 8" cap???? True?? I know there is a "FULL SS Ford-Mercury" cap as pictured BUT this arises from A picture in one of Lorin Sorensen's books that shows all the "accessory" items for the 39 Merc and it appeared to "only" show a "ribbed" SS ring that fit around the "standard" type Merc Cap?? I'll dig that photo out and post it.......your thought and or opinion. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
I have seen very few 39 Mercs but I worked 9 years for a car collector with a 40 Merc convertible Sedan and a 39 Merc Convertible Coupe.
There were no 40 Ford convertible sedans. 39 was the last year. These days you’re lucky to see any 39 Mercury. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Here is a comparison picture of the Regular 1939 Mercury Hubcap and the Accessory full Stainless Steel version. Note that the Accessory Hubcap has a larger circumference than the regular issue. Also, it is full Stainless Steel. A very nice hubcap to be sure. These are the revised "Mercury 8" hubcaps. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Complete set of Hubcaps for the 1939 Mercury. They comprise of the early issue "Ford Mercury" and the later revised "Mercury 8" varieties in both the regular issue and the full Stainless Steel Accessory Hubcaps. Unfortunately, I do not have any "Ford Mercury" Hubcaps in my personal collection. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
This is how I like to see them, all stock with original wheels. This fine example was at Dearborn back in 2019. Notice that it doesn't have the Accessory Stainless Steel Hubcaps? They must be pretty rare? |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Another fine 1939 Mercury Town Sedan in Australia. This one has just been imported from the USA and the Left Hand Drive steering has been retained. It is in very nice condition. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
I had a nice original 1939 Mercury fordor sedan with original leather interior back in 1966 at the age of 20.
I had already owned a 39 std fordor sedan. The interior of the Mercury was wider, the horizontal spoke steering wheel together with the strip type speedometer gave it a more modern look. The extra 10 hp seemed to make a difference too. The windscreen was sealed with wipers attached at the base - no more flapping around the roof. The downside was the view of the car from the rear quarter - it tended to look ungainly IMHO not as sleek as the Ford from that view point. |

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
Just another "rare" tidbit for the 39 Mercury.........As there are none on any of the Merc's pictured. Wind wings which are a 2 Door and 4 Door only option!!!

Re: How rare is a 39 Mercury?
AND now Trevor and "other" 39 Mercury affectionato's.......According to most published data, the 39 Mercury Convertible started production in 12/38 along with the Sedan Coupe. The "Ford-Mercury" hub cap was a reported "first three week" production Item and was done away with at the behest of a lot of "Ford" Dealers, as is reported. SO, the question is.....Looking through one of Lorin Sorensen's book I came across this picture of a 39 Convertible with Ford-Mercury hub caps???? Theories???? This would be approximately 6 weeks (at least) past the reported end to the "Ford-Mercury" hub cap
