Default 35-36 Spare Tire Mount Questions

I am trying to decide if not I will use a spare tire mount on my 35 coupe. I dont have one as of yet but I have a question on its installation. Does it take some kind of special studs/bolts to hold the mount off the body? My body isnt flush with the bracket underneath and it doesnt look like its suppose to be either. So I was thinking it make take some kind of studs to hold the mount off the body?

thanks!

Uptown83-

Ford made three different types of carriers for '35 (48-1433-A/B/C). The difference is related to the body type. It might be possible that you have the wrong carrier for your coupe. As for mounting studs, there are none. The carrier attaches to the body with 3/8"-24 bolts. Between the carrier bolt hole and the body there is a 1/8" gasket about the size of a quarter.

Hope this helps.

So the bracket underneath the body skin should be tight against the body?

It should be tight, yes.Mine is on my 36 coupe. What you might do is make a spacer that will slip in between the skin and inner bracket so that area won't dip in when you tighten the spare bracket down.

Thanks for information! Mine is way off and looked like it got rear ended at one point in its life. I am replacing the inner and outer panel so now I know what I need to do. Thanks again!

This was my great uncle's car. It came from California . I have a few other cars but I thought I would stop and knock this one out real fast. It had a lot more rust than I imagined and has become a task so far. My brother went out to california to pick this car up about 15 years ago. No one wanted it in my family so I took it in. My brother and dad are Model A guys.

Actually, the flat-back sedan/phaeton bracket is slightly convex, not straight.

I don't know anything about the bumper gaurds or the hood. I wasn't going to put them back. I thought it was weird having the smooth hood sides being the car was last driven in the 70s

I noticed those items as well plus the front bumper is a '36. Those bumper guards could be after market or possibly from another manufacturers car. I believe I may have one or two like those. Those smooth type hood/bonnet sides are available today and probably were back in the 70's as well. I prefer the looks of the original louvers and the cooling they provide for the engine compartment.
Looks like a project with plenty of work but it's coming together nicely.

VeryTangled-

I am not so sure the above information is totally correct. Reading from the "Ford Chassis Parts List - June 1937" (pg. 5), three different tire carriers are listed for '35s: 48-1433-A (models - 700, 730, 740, 750); 48-1433-B (models - 710, 720, 760, 770); 48-1433-C (model - 790).

There was also another spare tyre bracket for the 35 Australian roadster utility.
Uptown, go the distance and find the right mount. Check out some 5window hotrods that don't have a spare tyre......... ??? my2c.

For the 35 spare mount, you can find the part number embossed into the cast iron on the inside of the mount including the suffix letter. I believe there is no rubber or insulation between the body and the mount but My car had thin frame type insulation between the inner mount and the body about 1/16 inch thick cloth or felt. There should not be a wide gap between the body and the inner mount.

Two of my all original '35 flat back/slant back sedans have thin fiber washers (~1/16" thk or less) between the spare tire mount/casting and the body. These cars had never been apart before I got them so I am sure they came from the factory that way.

Danny, it was from a coupe, not a coupe ute.
It had been on the same farm out the back of here since new,it got unreliable so the farmer said ,so they dozed it into the creek and burned it,floods went over as well,
It gave up a good crank and block, wiper motor and the spare mount, that was about it,
