Re: 6 Volt Electronic Ignition
Stay with the stock Ford distributor. They work great, last for a long time and can be made to run if they ever break. The manufactures of electronic distributor change overs suggest you carry a stock distributor in case they break down. The stock distributors should be set up on a stobe machine to factory specs by someone who does a lot of them and they are like they were when they left the factory. G.M.

Re: 6 Volt Electronic Ignition
I changed mine to a pertonix and 12 volts.Been over 5 years ago,no trouble at all.I wouldn't mess around with points.JMO.I'm giong to do another project and the first thing I'm going to do is get rid of the points.Nothing wrong with points if you want to keep it stock, everyone is different and that's a good thing.

contact Henry Downing at THE PIT STOP in Texas for info. He is doing the conversions since Mickey stopped. ph. (903) 685-2531. I would'nt go back to a point ignition. True, the only real bad point is when they go bad you are stopped. No fixing on the side of the road except to install a spare. |

Re: 6 Volt Electronic Ignition
I have been running the same 6volt positive ground unit in my '40 for about the same length of time. It's a crab unit also. It's been great. I will not travel without the stock backup though. As much as I like the electronic, you can't beat the old Ford unit for reliability. If points get bad, you can still get it home.

Re: 6 Volt Electronic Ignition
I had my 53 Merc on a Pertronix module with 6vlt Pos. ground for years. (from the Pit Stop) Ran great for years with a stock Distributor. Then when I changed to 12 volts, I just moved to a Pertronix 12 volt model (also from Pit Stop). Always kept the points, cond. etc. in a bag in the truck, just in case. Never had to use it though. Make sure and tighten the advance springs on the dist. if you stay stock with a flathead distributor.

Re: 6 Volt Electronic Ignition
I run both a Redmond electronic and a stock one. The engine with the electronic one {35 Cabriolet} felt like a new engine when I installed it about ten years ago. I plan on converting my 39 PU to a electronic one also. Frank pkny
