Default Any ideas---

I just took my first test run with my new Snyder HC head and the difference in power is pretty striking. I now accelerate up grades in high gear which I decelerated on a week ago. It may be my imagination but I detect a slight light knock pulling on grades. It doesn't sound as heavy as a main or even a rod and it goes away when I retard the spark about half way. Checked timing and it is right on. This is a new H&H inserted engine. The sound was there before I installed the HC head but I don't think quite as much. Any ideas on this appreciated.

You don't need as much advance as you did with a stock head. Have you retarded the spark when going up the hills?

Yes, that's when the noise comes on-when it is under load. Retarding the spark makes it go away. It also cuts the power down some.

In addition to too much advance, your plug heat range may be too hot for the higher compression if you do highway driving. Try Larry's plug heat range test. My Super Brumfield head (160 psi cranking) likes hi octane gas in addition to colder plugs and is highly sensitive to the advance.

I too have the Snyder’s 5.5 head and after getting the timing right (thanks to Mr. Brumfield) it runs like a V8. Well not really but I am very impressed with the performance. Sense getting the timing correct I now only use about half the advance and on a hard pull I have notice that there is at times some pinging. I have learned to keep this at bay by backing off a bit on the advance. Got to go now because there’s damn Corvette trying to pass me.

Dusty,

How is the static timing method different with the higher compression head ? Still points just opening at TDC ?
