Default s15, t5 info. help!

if this is a no-no, I get it. but i'll ask anyway. i'm looking at a t5 trans with the numbers 1353 - 145 on a tag, cable speedo, possibly for my 36 coupe, 81a engine. I saw a list somewhere about different gear sets in different t5's. anybody know about this? is this a usable gear set? i'll keep looking, thanks.

1353-145 doesn't show up on charts I found. Here is a link to a chart with 1352 prefix numbers. scroll down

1352-145 is 1985-86 S10 w/2.5 L4 or 2.8 V6. The gears are: 3.76/2.18/1.42/1.00/0.72 That gearing is a little steep for my liking, but is about as good as it gets with S10 gearing.

It is better than a lot of them. a large amount of them , especially from the 4 cyl.'s have 4:03 first gear. not real useable on the street in my opinion. unfortunately, that is the only one that I have , and those Trans's are hard to come across up here. everything gets scraped. very little in the wrecking yards, unless they are less than 3-5 years old. everything else gets crushed. I am still looking for the one I want. you may find that a mustang, Camaro, or trans-am , with a t-5 will have a better ratio, just use the S-10 tail shaft housing for the forward shifter placement.

I typed it wrong- 1352-145 is what it is. (bill told me what "is" means years ago.)

probably would need to change the cluster gear, along with several other gears, washer, shims, etc,. I am not sure . I am sure someone else can answer that better than I.

To make a good T5 you need 2 gearboxes to start with...one from a car for the gears and the S-10 for the housing.

The gears are interchangeable on most of the T5s. Here are some references to T5 threads on the HAMB that was posted a while back. The Ultimate T-5 Swap Article was posted by Flat Ernie, he often post here on the Barn as well as the HAMB.

"T5 Source Information" "Here are some good threads with info on T5 transmissions & adapting them to our hot rods. Focused mainly on adapting it to the Flathead Ford, there's still lots of good info regarding other adaptations.

Stuck with an electronic speedo and need a cable, the easiest (and likely most expensive) is cable-x:

Here's a neat thread on using the very late model Mustang (05-07) V6 T5. These are short and have a yoke on the back. The shifter requires some work and this is how our veteran enjenjo did the trick:

And since you can't search for character strings less than 3 letters using the internal search engine, try using Google. Just type in: "T-5" site:jalopyjournal.com or "T5" site:jalopyjournal.com

I have a 1352-216 gearbox in my coupe. The gearing is close to what you have. With a 3.25 rear ratio, it works very nicely.

The gear ratio issue is going to depend on what your objective is with the car/truck. If you are just wanting to "drive it ", the gear ratios you have should work fine. If you are more interested in high performance then I would want the closer ratio gear set and a lower rear end gear. I prefer the T5z gear set with the 2.95 1st gear and a 4:11 final drive. It somewhat depends on personal taste!

weekend cruiser, I will be going through the rear, so a new gear set can be picked. also, thank you very much for putting that list together. I've probably looked at some of those threads, but not all. I've been thinking about this and keeping my eye opened for parts for a few months.

that gets expensive when you need two trannys to make one, plus all the new parts required for an overhaul, and the hogs head adapter. i still like the 4 spd overdrive. shorter, less frame butchering.

I have a 1352-145 in my pickup. I'm running a 3:54 rear end and it works fine, just a little low in first. That's not really bad as it makes the truck very easy to drive in traffic, on hills etc. In hind sight a 3:23 rear end would have been better. The overdrive is probably the best thing I did to my truck.

Thanks, but not my list, one I copies from the HAMB several years back (I think! ). If you don't mind dinking with it a little, try the gear set you have and see what you think. If you like it your done, if not it is fairly simple to drop it and do a gear swap later.

I think you will find that the 1352-145 trans is better than the 1352-045 trans. compare the ratio's and the spread between the gears

Alaska Jim is giving you some good advice there. Better ratios in the -145 gearbox.
