Snap rings
Hello ,
there are not many things that halt me in my tracks but the snap ring in the rear hub has. This is the first time i have attempted to remove one. I want to repack the bearings I have spent a couple of hours trying to remove one using screw drivers pointy nose cir-clip pliers but to no avail. I note that these snap rings do not have any holes or indentations in the ends to pull them open with pliers. Please can someone give advise how to remove these stubborn pieces of spring steel. ? They have me stumped. I don not want to damage the bearing cage. Is there any special tool remove these hub snap rings ? Thanks Mark. |

Re: Snap rings
Yes, there is a special tool that can be used however it was not available back in the era, ...so IMO it is unnecessary. With that said, one never knows what has been done along the way including the substitution of an incorrect sized ring.
As for yours, have you used a small flat-tipped screwdriver to pry out the ring? If so, then use a 2nd screwdriver behind the ring to keep outward pressure and keep walking it up and out of the groove. |

Re: Snap rings
Brent is correct. I use TWO screwdrivers. One in the left hand to "stake" the tapered end of ring and the other in my right hand to pry out the "reverse taper" end from the groove.
I did this while sitting on the floor with the hub pinched between my legs. Wear eye protection and stout jeans! Joe K

Re: Snap rings
Tap the grease seal down into the hub, then use pliers to pull the snap ring out
