Default Universal retaining washer

I'm putting things together. The bolt and washer that retain the universal to the transmission output shaft: Does the small tab on the washer face out to the bolt head or in towards the front half of the universal? Thanks!

(This is a "39 trans.)

Pete, Is you look close, the washer has a cone to it. The cone faces away from the engine. In other words, the convex side is nearest the head of the bolt.
The cone is what gives the washer a locking characteristic.

The small tab locks I into the spline on the engine side of the u/joint. to stop the washer from turning.

Would it be ok to install it using an impact wrench?

Thanks all. I was in a hurry so I put it in with the "tab" towards the bolt head. I don't see if my washer has a dome to it. I have at least one more. I'll double check and if they're all the same, I'll just have to take the trans out and redo it. At least I didn't get around to get the engine in. Do any of the vendors have the "real" washer? (That's what's known as a Belleville washer.)

If yours has the tab, then it's correct. However, you installed it backwards. I'd have serious anxiety wondering when it will decide to back out.

My U-joint capscrew has red loctite on the threads. My first 36 Ford which I did not build had the u-joint capscrew come out and wedged between the u-joint and housing while at a stoplight. Since I could not go forward, I backed up and the screw unwedged and I drove the car for a month before I fixed it. That is the car in pic at the left.

The OEM Bellville washer looks like this and also is installed with a lock washer.

There's one on Ebay right now but i would contact the seller to confirm bolt size before buying to find out if it's the real deal as he doesn't show a lock washer and it's difficult to see if it is concave. Shipping seems a bit high but, the total price is what they seem to be selling for these days.

The earlier version of the subject washer has no tab on it and I agree that in addition to the Belleville washer, a split lock washer was used as well.

I did not realize there was a first generation washer even though I had witnessed both with / without the tab. I continue to learn. Thanks David.

I did know there was a split type lock washer involved...

If overtightened they can flatten or even cup the wrong way. The only ones I have seen have had no tab.
I have seen a modern replacement type that has a tab.

Mart.

The dominant form of lock washer that I have encountered on originals was the 'shake-proof' with striations on both sides.

Agreed Dave. I tend to not use old lock washers unless absolutely necessary. As you know, they do lose their "gripping" strength.
