1940 Ford DeLuxe TEMP GAUGE QUESTION
This may be a goofy question but I am asking in good faith.
When the ambient temp outside is 87 degrees F and the engine has been sitting all night in the garage without running, is the TEMP NEEDLE suppose to drop all the way to the left and register on COLD. I ask because my temp needle ends up sitting half way between Normal and Cold after the car sits overnight. I don't remember this happening before. Thank you, JIM |

Re: 1940 Ford DeLuxe TEMP GAUGE QUESTION
With the ignition off, the needle should drop all the way to the left. With the ignition switch on and a cold engine, the needle should not come up further than the left tick mark, even on a hot day. Reproduction senders (US passenger side) are notorious for reading high. I went through several to get one that read cold with a cold engine, then that one went bad and started reading high. Got an original and now indications are normal.

Re: 1940 Ford DeLuxe TEMP GAUGE QUESTION
19Fordy, Both of my 40s all go fully to the left when cold and don't move until there is noticeable heat being generated. Maybe 80+ years of dust is interfering with the downward movement or the tiny spring that brings it back is finally too tired. PM me as I probably have some extra NOS gauges, I will look tomorrow afternoon.

Re: 1940 Ford DeLuxe TEMP GAUGE QUESTION
Ken, With ignition off my gauge goes all the way to the right also.
But, when the engine is cold and you switch on the ignition the gauge reads halfway between Cold and Normal. It does not drop all the way to the Left to Cold. |
