Have you had a look at the Hot Rod Works website?

Several of the older hot/street rod magazines had articles on this conversion. IIRC, the first one that I had seen used 50 Merc axles. I think that there was another using the early 1950's Ford truck axles.

Yeah I got a quote from them but at $3795 USD for a complete axle I am looking around at all options. The parts kit alone is $1295.00 but requires machining and a core on top of that. Dont doubt they are an excellent product looking at the quality.

Hi Fairlane
I did this on my 32 using a 36 Ford axle. Here's how it went:
I bought the axle housing ends from a Ford 9", along with the backing plates, brake asemblies and drums (50 bucks). Mine have the 5 X 5 1/2" old Ford bolt pattern. I did not get the axles, as I had no idea what i was doing yet.
I then had my machine shop take and cut the 36 Ford axle bells, then add the new 9" ends. They used a tube affair to make sure everything lined up properly (80 bucks).(Remember that on a 36 axle there are NO spring hangers, so I didn't have to worry about those).
Also, on a 36 and earlier Ford axle, the spider gears are a 12 tooth design, and must be replaced with the later 11 tooth type to be able to use the new/different axle SIDE gears. I bought the side new gears from Hot Rod Works (225 bucks). I had to find the replacement spider gears on the net (No big deal and cost about 20 bucks). After I got everything setup, I measured for axles and bought them from HRW (400 bucks).
I then had the brake drums turned, got new wheel cylinders, etc to rebuild the brakes. That's about it, except that I also got the "Open Drive" conversion from HRW (260 bucks). Great guys and everything is well made and fits perfectly. Guess I'm into the whole deal about $1200.00 us.
Forgot to add: I also had the machine shop modify the ring gear and carrier assembly to fit the new gears
If you have any other questions, just ask
Jim

One last thing, Fairlane. On the HAMB, there is a great post, mostly by SamIam that deals with this and has/had many pics. I can't provide the link as the site seems to be down. But, search his posts, and I think you'll get a great deal of info. It may be in the tech files, but not sure
