I don't think Skip Haney does can type coils since most of his work is for the early V8 types. From what I understand though, he uses a coils that are epoxy coated as replacements for the innards of the old Ford types. As was mentioned, the can type coils are more difficult to disassemble without noticeable change to the appearance of the finished product. If a person could get one apart and back together without affecting its appearance then it could be easily upgraded in the same way that Skip does.
