Default Dustless Blasting

Anyone here ever use a dustless blasting vendor or just the process? My 39 is looking bad along the drip rails and since this process is less harmful to the sheetmetal (so they say) I would like to get the area cleaned down to bare to see what I am dealing with. How does this compare to sandblasting in cost? I don't want to just wire brush and sand it.

Personally; I think you would have a lot more control over the process; by masking it tight with several layers of duct tape and blasting it with a small hand blasting gun or bucket blaster. Of course, you need to cover the rest of car. Done lots of small stuff like that over the years, with good results.

Can't imagine what the wet blaster guy would charge you to show up and set up a small job, like that.

I had my 51 Chevy dustless blasted and no warping. Did a great job.

Those holes for mounting stainless trim on the rear fender make the car in your picture a 1952 Chevy. '51s did not have this trim piece. 1952 pictured below! DD

A friend of mine had the roof, doors and hood on his '58 pickup truck wet blasted and the guy that did the blasting had no idea what he was doing. All four items got warped and my friend had a hell of a time fixing the doors & roof and had to get a new hood. The blaster must have had the pressure turned up to max pressure. Make sure the guy you use has blasted sheet metal before and knows what he's doing.

depends on who does it. I know a guy who blasts and sells blasting equipment who says it is the wrong process for a car. Have you thought of powder blasting?

It seems to me that the dustless blasting system is promoted as a business venture that requires only a minimum of training to go out and make the "big bucks"; as such you may have a good experience such as d. conrad reported or a terrible experience as related by TagMan. Probably a good idea to do a little more research on the actual operator; more so than the process. Just say'n.

I had the bare chassis of my '35 phaeton dustless blasted and I was very satisfied with the work and the result. Jim in San Jose.

I had a friend have his 41 chevy truck dustless blasted and it warped the doors and cab. I think he used too much pressure. I had a lot of work straighting it out, Never blast sheet metal unless you use low pressure, about 30 lbs and nozzle at 45 degree angle.

Dustless blasting can be a lot of things...the constructions version seems to use pretty coarse sand while the more refined types uses crushed glass.
So different media and pressure makes it go from mild to wild still calling it dustless blasting....
