16" Wheels
I am thinking about putting 16" wheels and tires on one of my Model A's. Does anyone regret going with the 16" wheels instead of 19" or 21"? Any drawbacks?

Re: 16" Wheels
I've tossed that idea around also, supposed to be a smother ride with "better?" tires.

Re: 16" Wheels
Mine came with cutdown original wheels and used 600X16s. I traded out to 19s and like the looks better now. My avatar shows the cutdown wheels.

I swapped out the stock wheels/tires on my Model A coupe for '35 wires (16-inch) and used 6.00x16 and 7.00x16 Excelsior Stahl Sport Radials (sold by Coker) and like them quite a lot. Seems to have reduced sidewall flex quite a lot and ride much nicer. But, the aesthetic is definitely more Pre-War hot rod, which is what I was after, so, your results may vary... |

Re: 16" Wheels
really comes down to looks. 90% of the people out there dont know the difference.
most on this board have a discerning eye. personally I only like the looks of stock wheels. if your building a 1940s hot rod, then yes, the 16s look great. |

Re: 16" Wheels
My Tudor came in 16's the top speed was 50 mph down hill with a tail wind! 19's on her now top speed 65 + but that comparing apples to oranges. With the 16's on her it seamed like she had 4.11 gears now it's feels the normal 3.78 just saying

I collected 18", 17" & 16" V8 wheels and in my opinion, the 18" 1932 wheels give a smooth ride and look better than the others.

Re: 16" Wheels
I just put the 16" wheels on in August and I love the better handling and smoother ride. I went with tubeless 225/75R16 radials and I added Tire Pressure Sensors. The tires have the same diameter as the 19" Model A tires, so there's no speedometer error. And they don't look oversized for the 5" wide rim. Everyone in my club likes the way my truck looks with the new tires. One of the reasons I went to 16" tires was to get rid of the tubes and also get a radial tire. I bought the Westlake tire at Walmart's for $67.00 each and run the tire pressure at 27 lbs. Another advantage to the wider tires, with more rubber on the road, your brakes are more effective.

Re: 16" Wheels
My '31 half ton looks kinda funny with small,'35 Ford wires on it. That's what was on it when it came out of long storage, as it was a brush painted, fixed up WW-ll era workhorse. I was told 19" tires were virtually non-existent during the war, so you would change over to '35 wires then maybe find some tires that size. I had to decide, 10 years ago, so I got new Goodyear All Weather Diamond Treads for it and have been very happy with them, Braking may be a tad better, I can't see too much difference in drive-ability difference from 19" rims on other A's I've had and driven. For looks, I agree with Bob Bidonde and his '32 rims or maybe go for '33 rims. My speedo gearing was never changed, so I'm going about 3-4 MPH slower than speedo shows. My spare is a "baloney skin" original Ford 19" rim & tire that came with the truck, probably a factory "Firestone" tire.

I wish any of those sizes were available here. How does the rim width on 18" and 17" wheels compare to the 19"?

Bob, What size are the tires in your first picture? They look bigger than the normal 4.75/5.00-19. I like them.

I just had to try the 16 inch with Firestone white walls after one season I went back to my original 19 inch with Diamond tread. I didn't care for the look.

I prefer the original look of nineteen inch wheels on my 30-31 model A's . The 1935 Ford 16 inch wheels ride and handle better .

PalAL, A couple of my rims were badly pitted and after powder coating they were still pretty rough, but no problems with the bead sealing.

Re: 16" Wheels
I recently bought a Victoria that had the 16” wheels on it. Attached is a picture of the car with the wheels....Last week I was able to buy a set of 19” wheels and tires for it....
For me the looks of the car with the 19’s is much better. The ride of the 16’s is better, the 16’s are not affected by the rough roads as much as the 19’s are the 19’s are easier to steer. For me I will stay with the 19” wheels...If anyone near the Phoenix area wants to buy a set of really nice Red powder coated wheels I know where they can find some. |

Re: 16" Wheels
It seems like most of the modern radials in the narrow, taller sizes are for Light Trucks and vans. Seems like that would contribute to a rough ride, but maybe would be better for running tubeless? I. E. stiffer sidewall would keep the bead sealed better? LT215/85-16 would be a good size at 30.3" tall.

Re: 16" Wheels
The LT designation means Light Truck......ie stiffer sidewalls. Try to stick with passenger car tires. The Westlake tires I bought are really nice tires and cheap too at $67 each. The 225/75R16 size are perfect replacements for the 19" tires.

Westlake tires are made in China by ZC rubber company. They have been the subject of forced government recalls due to safety issues! They are in the Top 4 tires to avoid at all costs.

Re: 16" Wheels
I forgot to show this GREEN car that I absolutely love!
As far as tire sizes, most folks that do the "big 'n little" combinations use either a 7.00 R16 or 7.50 R16 on the rears, and 5.50 R16s on the front, although those are possibly 6.00 R16s on the FRONT of the black coupe with red spokes. The rears are probably 7.00 R16s on that shiny black coupe. The 1935 16" spoke wheels are ALL 4"-wide between the beads, and ALL of these tire sizes fit these 4" rims just fine. The SOLID 16" wheels like on the RED/BLACK coupe are also 4"-wide for '40 and '41, while the 16" solid wheels for '42-'48 are 4-1/2" wide, and work well for rear tires. I'd keep 4" wheels on front, while the 4" works just as well as 4-1/2" on the rears. ALL have the same 5-1/2" five-lug bolt circle as the Model A. DD |

Re: 16" Wheels
Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one. Your car is your car. Do with it as you like. I love original cars. I also appreciate modifieds and hot rods. My 1930 Tudor was a modified when I bought it as it had non original paint and juice brakes. I originally planed on a restoration when I got it. But finances wouldn't allow that. I felt it was unstable with the original 19's. I bought a set of 16's. I had two of them widened 1.5". 750x16 rear and 600x16 front. Reproduction Firestone bias ply tires. When replacement time comes along I will upgrade to radials. I truly appreciate the stability of the 16's.

Re: 16" Wheels
Got 8.20-15s on the rear of mine, 30” diameter, with smaller tires on front. They fit the well nicely. Most non Model A folks don’t have a clue that it is not original. I think a larger contact patch for the tire makes stopping much safer. It all depends on who you want to impress, or what you like best. I just do what I like, or feel is safer.

I see where European classic has 6.00-16 and 6.50-16 bias ply tires for $115 and $125 shipped. I already have a set of their 21" tires on my 29 Tudor and they really ride and drive well. This may be another good option.

Re: 16" Wheels
Im running modern radials on 16" ford wires.having driven cars with 19 and 21 inch stock wheels I can say the advantage is amazing...ride and handling vastly improved.,but the biggest increase is in braking effciency, I run cast iron drums with woven shoes with correctly fitted teds floaters. The ability to apply full braking effort without skidding allows my mechanical brakes to operate comparable to hydraulics.

Re: 16" Wheels
Mike at Classitique did a fine job sewing my top..he kept his word on the delivery date (10/23 and it came a week early) and the work is first class.Gonna wait for a bit before I put it on,still a few weeks of real good open car weather yet..want to drive it year round so the top will go on,but it was nice having an open car for the summer..Thats the original top bows, main bow and belt rail, hard as a rock.I lined the bows with flat bar to brace the 90 year old joints..
She's a matching frame/engine number/fuel tank date (within a week or so) car would have been an easy restoration...but there are enough restored model a's around.. Last edited by Jack Shaft; 10-28-2020 at 07:26 PM. |

Pretty much decided on 29" tall P215/75-16 tires. Close to the 29.5" tall 19" tires now on the Huckster.

Back in the day taller rear tires had really nothing to do with stance, hotrodders were after road speed, big tires gave you 'hotrod overdrive'. Randy, thats a beautiful roadster..

Re: 16" Wheels
Went internet tire shopping. Bought (2)- Douglas P215/70-16 Made In USA for $52.00/each at Walmart. Look pretty good mounted up. Wondering if (2)- matching Douglas P225/70-16 at $61.00/each on the rear would fit OK. About .5" taller and .3" wider. Trying to decide if they might be too wide for the wheels. Anyone tried that size?

Re: 16" Wheels
You will be fine with the bigger size. The load rating plus the wide footprint means modern radials on an A have an easy life, even with some sidewall deflection they work fine, the 205/55 16's I use have quite a bit..Got mine for 52 bucks a piece, not too worried about life given the price and the low load on them..I even 'crown' the fronts some, running 45 pounds pressure to reduce steering effort..I use construction grade steel valve stems, spend money for good valve stems, its often overlooked..

Re: 16" Wheels
On the 29 CCPU has 21 like OEM
On the 31 Slant 16 s They look great on the slant but distinct advantage on touring vehicle. Better handling less wondering, more tread on road for improved braking and a slightly better ride. Put modern shocks on the Slant which greatly improved handling and ride. The slant is our main touring vehicle. Love the CCPU but not so much for a long tour.... |

I guess you don't realize that your "Crown" will wear away and flatten the tread. All you are doing is wearing out the center of you tires faster.

Re: 16" Wheels
Remember if you run a 600-16 on your spare you will have to let some air out to get it into a wheel well. Carry a tire pump and everything is good. This is true on the '30-'31 and I assume the same on the earlier cars. Running a smaller tire for the spare might work but I haven't tried it.

Re: 16" Wheels
Anyone ever use a temporary spare tire on a 1935 16" wheel in a fenderwell? I see they make 145/90-16 and 155/90-16 sizes. Put a cover on it and the wheels match what is on the road.

Re: 16" Wheels
For my '29 Tudor I want to use a set of 1935 16" wheel and the wheel diameter is 4", as everyone knows. In shopping for radial tires for my 16" wheels, Coker has some nice Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial 650R16's for $329, specified for wheel width 4:00" - 6:00" and 28.8" overall diameter, which is similar i overall diameter to my car's stock 21" tires. Looking at regular commercially available tires I cannot find any tire with a specification for a similar overall diameter specified for a 4" wheel width -- instead, most specifications are for a 5" - 6" wheel width, but at least 5.5" wheel width if I go up to 215/85/R16 which is required to get a similar overall tire diameter to my stock tires. For example, there's a Firestone "Transforce CV" 195/75R16 with overall diameter of 27.5" for $136 from Tire Rack but the wheel width is specified as 5:00" - 6:00". My question is: does the Forum think it would be O.K. to use a modern tire spec'd for a minimum 5:00" or 5:50" wheel width on a 1935 16" wheel which is only 4:00" wide? It appears that is what many on this Forum have done and they are all still alive and well. Just checking. Just to reiterate, the Coker Stahl Sport is spec'd for 4:00" - 6:00" which suggests that a tire spec'd for 5:00" - 6:00" should be O.K. on a 4:00" wide wheel.

Re: 16" Wheels
Paul, I ended up buying USA made Douglas P215/70-16 and P225/70-16 from Walmart. Maybe a little wide for the wheels and 75 aspect ratio would have been better, but it looks and drives fine and the price was right.

Re: 16" Wheels
Thanks. That's what I was looking for, i.e., confirmation that a tire spec'd for 5" - 6" wide wheels would work O.K. on a 1935 Ford wheel which is only 4" wide. I don't want the tires popping off on me. Thanks, again.

Re: 16" Wheels
This is what Carroll Shelby (yes, that one) did to fit a side mount in his sport coupe. As long as the 19 is close in diameter..but even if it isnt, its a spare,it'll get you to a shop.
Paul,I run 205/55's on my coupe with 35 wires,no problem. Some wives tales floating around about sidewall flex and the ford wheel flange but that don't hold water |

Re: 16" Wheels
I know it is overkill for a 50-60 mph car, but since a buddy of mine has all of the equipment, I went ahead and Road Force Balanced my 16" Douglas tires and wheels. Glad I had extra wheels since one was a little out of spec for true. Smooth as can be, and these tires are not bad about following the road grooves that the local Log and Chip 18-wheelers make. Also found some 155/90-16 temporary spare tires that should fit inside the fender wheel wells and hopefully the tire covers will work too.

Re: 16" Wheels
I like the stock look of the original tires, 19 or 21. It is just my preference. I had 16 inch tires on a car in the 60's and didn't like them. Looks and harder to steer with the stock steering box. Switched back to the 19 inch wheels and tires.

Re: 16" Wheels
Right now I really like the looks of these 16" tires/wheels on my 30 Huckster but I am definitely keeping the 19" tires and wheels in case I want to change back.
I did try the 16" wheels/tires on my 29 Tudor but didn't like the look at all! |

Re: 16" Wheels
In my opinion, sixteen inch wheels ruin the original look of the model A .

Re: 16" Wheels
I personally prefer the look of the original 19" or 21" wheels on a Model A. For those who may be considering changing from the original size to one of the later V8 wheels for performance reasons, I might suggest that they also consider the new radial tires from Coker as a possible alternative. I've heard that they drive much better than other "not-radial" tires, and by doing so would also avoid speedometer accuracy issues. Just my thoughts, FWIW.

Re: 16" Wheels
tuneman: I purchased an after-market TPMS that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I chose one that a knew worked on 6 volts. Because I am using 35 Ford 16 inch wire wheels, the included valve stems are too small in diameter to fix the 16" wheels. I had to modify the larger metal valve stems to take the mounting ball from the TPMS valve stems. The pressure is sensed with a wireless connection between the tire sensor and the receiver. The TPMS system I purchased also tells me the generator output voltage.

Re: 16" Wheels
Chris Haynes had his 16 inch wheels widened 1.5 inches. Does anyone know how this is done and can they recommend anyone to do it? I am in Tennessee.

Re: 16" Wheels
Mike, if I was to show this post to the wife, I know she would jump at the chance to go somewhere warm! Question, when you had the 16" wheels on your Victoria, did the tires rub the front brake rods? How wide are the tires?

Re: 16" Wheels
Widening the wheels seems like a lot of expense for not much gain. I have stock 5 inch wide 35 Ford wheels on which I mounted 225/75R16 tires. The tires don't like at all oversized for the rims and the tread width is 7 inches. Unless you're looking to install 10-11 inch wide tires, the stock rims work fine.

Re: 16" Wheels
Hi Fred, The tires are 6.5 X 16.
No, they did not rub anything. Obviously we all know that there are a lot of cars out there running 16” wheels I think it really comes down to personal preference. To say that there is a right or a wrong is not correct. Mike |

Re: 16" Wheels
I don't know what it costs to have a wheel widened but you can have new ones made in a variety of widths and diameters. They are not cheap but they are brand new and sealed for use with tubeless tires. I've had two sets made by the "wheel smith" out of california. I have a dozen real nice original '35's, two of which will be used for the spares on my DD. I know that stock '35's are dirt cheap compared to brand new ones but if you want wider than stock, going new and running tubeless is an option.

Re: 16" Wheels
I run 35 ford wires tubeless with no issues, I do use metal valve stems. At fifty bucks a tire crowning is a non issue,a wide footprint distributes the low weight just fine.If I get five years out of the tires thats 40 bucks a year cost..how cheap does it have to be?
