I have no leaks. On occasion on a slight downhill I can smell exhaust fumes. What could be the problem?

Most likely, blowby coming out the oil fill tube. It finds its way in through gaps in the floorboards or around the steering column. Pretty common, especially if your motor has a lot of time on it.

Hi , Sounds like Hydro carbon blow by from your breather cap. A lot of folks put a special cap on that vents it under the cab. Berts catalog pg 31 part # A6764

Blowby is caused by exhaust gasses getting past the rings and is worst when the engine is under load (foot down on the accelerator). On a downhill run, wouldn't his foot be OFF the accelerator and the motor slowing the car? That would mean VERY little blowby, if any on even a very worn motor. I'd be looking elsewhere.
I've seen tail pipes extended in an effort to keep exhaust gasses out. I don't think it achieves anything but I've seen it done.

I'll have to check it out more when the weather gets nice. Motor was supposed to have been rebuilt before I bought last year. I did put steel wool in the cap last summer because of some (very little) oil being blown out occasionally. i guess a compression test is in order first.

Any chance you have an exhaust leak? Sometimes the Exhaust Manifold/Muffler connection will leak slightly,. The leak can be so small you may not notice any increased noise. Look at the connection and see if visually there is any soot or exhaust markings. Also take the fan belt loose and blow some smoke at it to see if you can see a leak.
