is this really Folkestone gray...?
Pics of my '40 painted in my garage yesterday.
Ordered Folkestone gray from TCP... why does it look like Sahara Tan... are my old eyes playing tricks on me? Got some serious orange peel (but that's a different story....) grabbed this pic off the web: Last edited by white64; 04-18-2016 at 07:39 AM. |

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
sure looks tan to me. Those cars look the best with a dark color as they are big. My favorite is Cloudmist gray. A green and gray mix.

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
It sure does look like Sahara. I have seen numerous supposed Folkstone cars painted Sahara OR a very incorrect shade of Folkstone.

The complicating thing is I need another quart or so to clean up the orange peel, so I wonder if I order another quart will I get the REAL folkestone gray or the folkestone "Tan" I have now.... This car has been a challenge every step of the way. |

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
The top of the gallon of paint from TCP reads:
"1939-1940 FORD FOLKESTONE GRAY MATCH TO JOE RIGGS ORIGINAL SAMPLE" Then of course it states in smaller print on the bottom of the label: "CHECK COLOR BEFORE SPRAYING"... But if you don't have an original color anywhere on the car, I guess you gottah trust the label.... |

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
It appears that your photos were taken under florescent lighting. In my experience that type of lighting gives a less-than-accurate depiction of color.

Still, that car was restored properly and the Folkstone, a very accurate recreation. Here's another photo in natural light of the same car. It's apparent in its "gray" vs tan.

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
Mike,
Sorry, but I meant in the two photos at the top of the thread depicting his recently painted fenders and hood. I certainly agree that the other photos of whole cars are gray, not tan. and I'm not surprised that once outdoors his paint color is indeed gray. In my book, Folkstone Gray is a very handsome color. The '39 convertible sedan that I restored was that color, including originally. |

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
My 32 delivery is painted Folkstone Grey from an original mixture code. First time we shot a sample panel it was a very light tan that looked grey in some lights. I contacted a really knowledgeable 40 Ford builder that said it was correct. I really like it but I've never been able to get a true color photo. I've been contacted by a couple of prospective buyers who said they'd be interested if the car wasn't grey? Take a look at Cloud Mist Grey, sure looks light green to me. Henry's paint name rs were confused!

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
I've seen Folkstone Gray cars that were supposed to be original and although the color was somewhat "washed out", I could see the tan tint in it. Maybe the "stone" reference is to indicate the tan tint?

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
Not try to be a smarty pants, but here's my "totalled" 40 in 1964. It was an original folkstone grey. Trouble is, it's in B & W. I remember always thinking it looked like the old time grey primer. It did not have a "tan" look at all. Here's another color chart that is worth looking at.

You would have been much better off ordering 2 gallons to begin with and be sure to mix the 2 gallons together before shooting. It would have cost close to 1 gallon plus a matched qt or two. I learned this the hard way. Took me 3 cars to learn. The third car I ordered an additional gallon and it matched just peachy. The 4th car I ordered 2 gallons to begin with. You need to plan on something unplanned happening that requires more paint than expected. It has happed 3 times in a row for me! Sometimes the TCP global people don't get very close on color. If it is important to you, you should send them a color card to match a quart before getting your 2 gallons. This process will still be cheaper than buying 1 gallon of PPG. I ordered a quart of 63 corvette ermine white and got just plain white not off white like it is supposed to be. Another hint is if you don't put enough paint on the primer will show through like black primer and the paint will look dark and the panel colors won't match what you have left in your gallon. Two coats isn't enough IMHO. The painter I hired put on 4 coats and then color sanded. He also ran out of 1 gallon and requested more paint on two different cars. Learning the hard way sucks sometimes. Another thing is to order a quart before ordering the 2 gallons. Shoot out the inside of a fender to make sure you like the color. I tried a quart each of 57 t-bird green, 51 sportsman green, and 41 lochaven green recently before finally deciding on 2 gallons of lochaven green for a 41. I also looked at the 3 shades for several weeks. I looked at the bambalino blue for my 36 woodie a while before it grew on me as well. My prof painter pal Jorge I told the story to said he learned these same lessons the hard way a long time ago. Last edited by mrtexas; 04-18-2016 at 01:17 PM. |

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
Good advice mrtx...
Looks like another gallon is needed and a MEDIUM reducer this time; and a nice cool, dry sunny day with not too many bugs... Sounds like a day in Maine that happens maybe once or twice a year! More painting! ....after a another round of 320 block sanding: several more days of an occasional daytime beer, with bad words and classic rock on the radio await! Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
There used to be a company in Bethany, CT. called Colorite. They used to advertise in Hemmings. Don't know if they are still around, but they knew their colors.

Re: is this really Folkestone gray...?
Colorite is no longer around last time I had heard. And, more often than not it was "Colorong".
