Tie rod ends question
Here's a strange question that may well have been asked before, but I didn't see it come up in any search results.
If I look at the two tie rod ends in the attached picture, the one on the left has the grease fitting and the bolt both on the same side, whereas the one on the right has the grease fitting and bolt on opposite sides - what is going on here? Mike, Johannesburg South Africa |

Re: Tie rod ends question
From early 1928 through Oct 1930 the grease fitting faced the front, Nov 1930 to end of production they faced the rear.

Re: Tie rod ends question
That doesn't really explain how the grease fitting got to be on the same side as the bolt, or am I missing something?

Re: Tie rod ends question
Your missing something, the bolt was always to the back.

Re: Tie rod ends question
why Ford did it that way is not very bright. the bolts ALWAY goes to the rear. so on the early ones with the fitting in the front it is a pain to get grease in the fitting with a original grease gun. over the years I have seen many tie rods in backwards.

Re: Tie rod ends question
It seems le all the parts suppliers I have looked at only supply the one with the grease fitting and bolt on the same side, so if you wanted to restore a vehicle that is meant to have the ones with the grease fitting opposite the bolt, you are on your own....

Re: Tie rod ends question
Thanks Pluck,
What I was referring to is that the suppliers of new parts seem to ONLY supply the ends with the bolt and grease fitting on the same side, which is a nuisance |

IS THERE A FORD PART NUMBER ON THE ENDS? Also on that note, still concerning Tie Rod ends... All of my Tie Rods (Spindle Connecting Rod Assembly) have the threaded grease fittings about 1-1/2 inches away from the Tie Rod Bolts (large round area) except one. This Tie Rod assembly has the threaded grease fittings on the Spindle Connecting Rod Ends within the small round area almost to the bolt itself bu within a relief that was made for a zerk. Not mentioned in the Standards...but would this be for the early Tie Rod assembly used before the 4th and final spindle arm change which lengthened the threaded tie rod from 42-3/4 to 43-1/2 inches? Also to...the Tie Rod Tube has a weld from one end to the other except the threaded ends....later rods do not have this. Thanks. Pluck Last edited by Steve Plucker; 12-23-2018 at 07:49 AM. |
