Default Generator - too much lateral movement

I stripped my 'A's engine down to remove a faulty fan, and discovered that the generator seems to have excess lateral movement as indicated in the attached picture. Up to 3/16" movement in and out.

Please can anyone tell me if this is acceptable, or what do I need to do to correct this?

It's not normal, and it looks like there are some pieces missing that hold the felt seal and locate the bearing

Brattons lists generator bearing retainer componets , part number 15300 . They also list a starter thrust washer that could be used on the commutator end of the armature . You could probably use metal washers on the drive end . these parts can shim out the lateral movement of the armature . Use fiber washers on the commutator end . I like to keep a good variety if spacer washers when I'm rebuilding generators and starters for this reason . Be sure and leave some clearance ...
