Camshaft
hi all
Looking to buy a Camshaft and wondering about what fellow Barner's have to say on which camshaft to use Bill Stipe's 330 cam or the 340 cam or if there is something else available? I read somewhere about someone using a crane cam Just looking for the best for the Money! Thank You in advance Tinkirk/Terry |

Yes i wondered about that so
The plan is i'm going with a 6.0 head I just switch the rear gears to a 3.27 didn't want to spend the money on an overdrive setup i will be going with the larger intake valve's Basically i'm looking for as much power as i can get out of this little motor there may be or, I should say will be changes down the road as time passes! Hi Terry,
Just one (1) past experience that I think worked with my 1930 Briggs Town Sedan. First I called Mr. Stipe's Company to tell him exactly what I was planning to install, what I expected as far as being somewhat close to originality, and asked their advice on what cam to buy. Told them I was already having the flywheel lightened, crank counterbalanced, maintaining original size SS valves, plus providing other items below, and after their recommendation, I bought the Stipe 330 cam. With a dial caliper verifying lift, Mr. Stipe's cam was found to be made to perfection. Provided a B distributor and a B carburetor with this 330 cam accompanied with the Police Head that came with this Model A and installed a new 3:27 ring gear. As such, verified gas mileage is 20 mpg in stop & go traffic ..... never tested on an interstate straight run ...... never had to shift to 2nd in hill country or for crossing Mississippi River bridges or their up-ramps. Only drove up to 55 mph ...... accelerator not yet floored, so have no idea how fast it can go. Keep rebuilt A carburetor and a rebuilt A distributor in trunk, both of which can be switched out in minutes if one wants to see more A originality. Reduced rpm's with a 3:27 can mean less piston ring wear, cam wear, and Babbitt wear in addition to distributor, generator, and water pump wear. If you call Mr. Stipe's place, you will obtain professional cam responses. |

I have the Stipe IB330 cam in my engine; 5.5 Snyder head, counter balanced crank, Stromberg 97 carb, FS Zipper dizzy, OD tranny. Combination works well.

I have the stipe 330 cam in my tudor. It has a snyder 5.5 head, oversize intake valves, and a B carb. It runs great, and has plenty of power.
Bill Stipe says the 340 cam is better if you have big valves, weber carb, and 6 or 7 to one head. otherwise 330 is the cam to use. http://specialtymotorcams.com/pages/camshafts.html |

Just to add a bit of clarity here, there are TWO completely different Stipe 340 cams: the IB340 (Improved B) and RR340 (Road Runner). The RR340 has more duration and overlap and is much more a mid-power cam for modified engines.
Vince's website has a page that shows the specs of the Stipe cams in question. LINK Just be aware of the differences and exactly what you order when you buy or ask for a "340" cam. |
