Default Installing Rear Window Glass in '39

I will soon be reinstalling my rear window glass in my '39 coupe. Are there any tricks to make this go in easier? I installed them once before about 35 years ago but I can't remember (getting senile I guess) how I managed to work the exterior lip of the seal through the window opening in the body with the seal installed on the window glass. Thanks.

The old rope trick, a small rope in the groove , start the fit and pull on the rope to lift the lip of seal in placein the body , a helper / holder makes a BIG difference!! ernie n tx

Make sure the rubber seal fit the window openings properly before setting time to do this. My first ones were from Carpenter and were way bigger than the openings, Drakes were ordered and fit perfectly, contrary to what some have said that seals are same manufacturer. When ready have someone inside to hold and put pressure against glass. I knew about the rope trick but thought it was probably like twine size.Friend who helped me or actually I helped him is an automotive glass installer by proffession and he showed up with clothesline size or jump rope size about a 1/4" diameter and some silicone spray bet it took him all but 5 minutes ,definetely two man job.

You can also use some lubricant; some use dish soap, but I found some stuff electricians use for pulling wire. It's clear and comes out of the bottle the consistancy of snot, but it dissolves to water with an easy cleanup. I'll try to find the manufacturers name and post it.

Thanks for the "rope trick" advise. Now that you guys have mentioned it, I do remember using some cord last time. Relative to the fit of the seal, I assume if the seal fits tightly around the edge of the seal when installed on the window glass, it is good to go, right?

Some folks say it's not needed, but I used this to seal the glass in the rubber. I also installed it under the rubber lip after the window was installed. It cleans up easily with kerosene or tar and grease remover.
