Coils: rebuild or use NOS
I would like some advice about coils. I have a couple of NOS Ford coils, would they be good to use or should they be sent in to be rebuilt with new parts? I need to replace the one on my 34 1 1/2 ton truck and am wondering if the NOS would be good to use or are the newer ones better?
I know the Model T coils deteriorate with age and must be rebuilt to run well. |

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
Send the NOS one in to Skip to be rebuilt, if you have 2 send them both and have a spare. I think it only costs like $83 or near that each. And you are right, the insulation goes bad whether it was used or not so don't tempt problems by trying to use the NOS ones, just be happy you have perfect cases to be rebuilt.

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
Hello, I can second the motion. Having a reliable coil is essential to eliminating variables in electrical system troubleshooting. Having a pair of known good ones would be the way to go IMO. Mr. Haney is a well known quantity in the refurbishment of these items, as well as the improvement of water pumps. I have one of his coils in the car and another in the 'boot.'

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
I was having all kinds of problems with my '40 and sent him mine a year ago and it worked right away when I put it back in and it's perfect. It was $ 85 bucks.....

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
I have NOS '33-'36 coils that I won't even attempt to use on my cars. The wire insulation, other insulating components, and coil potting compounds (if even used back then) are definitely inferior to todays insulations. I get the coils I run on my cars, and the backup spares I carry, rewound by Skip Haney. Have never had any of his coils fail.

I had Skip rebuild 2 for me. I have been using one for about 6 years. Have the 2nd one just in case.

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
I'm sorry to intrude but this is on the same topic. If you have 2 rebuilt by Skip and the first one last 15 years. Does that mean that the second one has gone bad sitting on the shelf? Or does Skip install insulation that does not break down like the original?

Re: Coils: rebuild or use NOS
I doubt if Skips coils will ever fail with the modern materials he uses. These old coils CAN NOT be checked with an ohmeter or even a coil tester. They all look good cold and have to be run heated above 130 degrees internaly. Thats when they fail. G.M.
