Default 1939 ford deluxe sedan Dry air cleaner

I just purchased a used air cleaner for my 39 ford flathead. The air cleaner didnt come with a decal. Macs has decals for a dry air cleaner for the filter I have (hat type filter) it says Filter must be kept oiled every 1000 miles. Can someone please explain to me what that means for the dry air filter?

Any help is appreciated!

The copper filter element should be oiled.

A tip from an old serviceman. If and when you go to clean out the housing, protect your hand with a rag or glove. The inner lip edges were not smooth finished. They work as good as knife.
