Default Dual spare mounts??

HI folks,

The 29 coupe I just bought has dual spare tire mounts on the fenders. Is this rare as so far I have not seen another one like it. Of course, that isn't saying much as I haven't really looked too far other than the local car shows....

Thanks again for any and all info, it is appreciated!!

It's not that unusual for folks to add them during restoration although it's less common than it once was. It was quite uncommon for them to be purchased new that way. It's a bit inconvenient on '28-29 models as it severely limits the door opening making it a bit tough to get in and out.

Thanks for the reply! I really have no idea if they are original to the car. Probably no way to tell for sure is there?

Neat looking though, I think I'll keep em that way. Right now it has 32 Ford wheels and tires on it so its not so hard to open the doors. Will have to see when I get the original wheels and tires back on her.

Thanks again, and have a good day!

One way to tell is if the arms are riveted to the frame or bolted on. The factory used rivets.

Also look if the same bolts and body frame welting are identical, then you'll know. My phaeton has dual sidemounts and each assembly underneath is different.

Yeah, kinda rare on a coupe-----but can come in handy on a tour! The old dual
mounts really shine best on a fordor, JMHO.

A guy offered to trade me a welled RH fender for my unwelled one, so that I could then have dual side mounts. I responded by telling him that I didn't even like the LH one that I had, but in a PU, there's not much of an option.

Looks like they are both bolted on. Then again, that could have been done when it was restored. Either way, it looks cool, so we are gonna keep it that way. Both fenders are welled? so would look wierd without the wheels there anyway.... ;o)

Thanks again for all the info, it is appreciated!!

Will have to check the assemblies underneath to see if they are both the same or not. I believe they are, as I did not notice any differences when I looked for the bolts/rivets...

Thanks again for the info, it is all greatly appreciated!!

I believe the side mounted spare tires were installed int the factory only on some of the 31 deluxe models where trunk racks were standard and the pick ups. These were riveted to the frame....sometimes. The passenger side was an accessory. On my Deluxe Phaeton, the driver side is riveted and the the passenger side bolted.

Check to see if a 21" wheel and tire will fit in the well,

sometimes people put wider & shorter wells in the fenders to accomodate 16 " wheels

Its not to easy to fit the original wheels in those altered wells !!!
