Let me clarify my thoughts on this....as to my pondering a class for transmission rebuilding. I’m not really interested in doing a seminar for the general public. In other words, for guys who would like to rebuild their own tranny, I feel that our transmission rebuild book plus the general advice available on the internet (including the Fordbarn) is sufficient for most aspiring mechanics.

What I really had in mind was a focused school in the early Ford transmission rebuilding that covers these in an in-depth way. The intention would be to attract people who are interested in this work but also those who think they could build a repair business for the job. This might be an extension of a general line vintage auto repair shop who would like to expand into this specialty. Or it might be someone like us who just wanted to focus on the early Ford transmission work.

I never thought that this rebuild business would grow the way it has and we have more work than we can handle. I’ve often felt that a group of qualified transmission specialists located around the country might make sense. You wouldn’t believe how many phone inquiries we get from individuals who can’t find anyone local to them for this work.

If there is a good interest in doing this, I will put something together with a date and place. I figure that we could handle up to 10 or 12 people and I’d like to stick to the concept that I have described above. If the interest isn’t there we’ll just keep on plugging away until retirement smacks me in the face.

Comments are welcome here on this thread but specific questions can also be directed to me via private message.

MAC,
I think many would enjoy learning from you!

To the original poster, if you were in TN, I would hire you today. Finding good help from people willing to learn is impossible these days. At my shop we do a bit of everything in small portions, but are always terribly backed up and have given up on finding any kind of decent help.

I am glad that we received some good comments on this topic. sounds like there are plenty of folks who will keep it going. I am up for any weekend training on any topic. Its just good to get to know how to keep these great machines on the road and be with the folks who share the passion. Mart is right, youtube videos are a good way to keep this going. I learned how to build my 47 ford as a teenager by asking the old guys close by. now I am the old guy. funny how that happens.

Been in auto marketing for a bit. It comes and goes. Fine line between mass market and spreading info.

Lots of good thoughts here and Mart and youtube might be one of the solutions except it does take doing it with others to really learn. im going to start doing youtube vids so any tips are appreciated. anyone who wants to call a few of us over for a weekend to pass on your knowledge, let me know. Ill be there. Im really not looking for a new job, just thinking once I quit my profession of 35 years what I will do to re"fire". I plan to go back to my passion which is old fords and i will not need to make money, just have something fun to do besides drink beer and watch tv. i enjoy working on motors, carbs and dizzys just need the experience to make them work well. thanks for the thoughts.
