6v to 12v conversion
I would like to convert my 37 to 12v negative ground alternator. I see Macs has a 12v neg ground alternator kit. What else would I need?

Also, do a search of this site, that is one of the most covered topics in any older car forum.

Re: 6v to 12v conversion
As WGA said: This is one of the most covered topics on this site. You will also find that many replies ask why you want to convert? If you have a problem, there might be an easier and less costly solution. Maybe someone will post an estimate of cost to make this conversion. Might surprise you. John

Re: 6v to 12v conversion
A 6 volt positive ground alternator (single wire) is available. If you have good clean and tight connections throughout, you don't need to convert to 12 volt.

Re: 6v to 12v conversion
Someone once said "a picture is worth a thousand words", if that's so, a video with audio demonstrating the 6 to 12 volt conversion should be priceless. Good thing is, they are only $24.95 + $3.50 S&H from Vic's V8 Videos. PM me if you would like a DVD of the 6 to 12 Volt Conversion Video or to find out about our other restoration videos. Vic

Re: 6v to 12v conversion
I have a rusty generator that is not working and crusty regulator now. It looks like it will cost about $175 to replace them. I can buy the 1 wire 12v alternator kit plus voltage reducer for the gauges for about $220.
I also have two cars with 6v generators which I am fine with. So I agree, no reason to switch at that point. However if I need to replace a lot of parts to fix the 6v then I might as well go 12v and eliminate the obvious downside of 6v such as accessories. Thats why I'm wondering what else I may need. Thanks for the advice. Bob |

12 volt Alternator
Quote:
Larry Becker (Larry Sr.) 419-668-5986 Larry remanufactures alternators and they work great! They also cost less than the high-overhead online parts sellers. I had one of his 6-volt alternators first, then he converted it to 12 volts. He also has a strong and clean looking slingshot for mounting an alternator on an 8BA. Larry's a great guy who will take the time to answer all your questions, too. Highly recommended! |
