Default What years Power Steering will work in 54 Mercury

My friend has a 54 Mercury and wants to know what years Power Steering will work in his car. His car does not have power Steering. Where a good place to start looking for a setup. I have no idea where to look for this setup. I wonder what years are the same that will work.

You might be better off posting this on the Late V8 forum. I know Ford went to ball joints in '54, so I would expect Mercury did too. Since the front suspension systems are different, I would expect the steering systems to be as well.

Easiest would be a 54 mercury. I had one with powersteering. The crank pulley is the hardest piece to find. The special pump bracket bolt was reproduced at one time.

Find a old hollander book, might help or talk to 55 56 car people.

If you dont care about factory correct, those electric power steering kits that go between the steering eheel and steering box would be easier and that valve and slave cylinder always leaks

If it's 12v, I think the late Saturn electric would be a great application.

How compact is the Saturn set up? All i know about them is the aftermarket ones i saw on some car builder show. They were nice and compact. I know on a 54 merc there isnt much room between the firewall and brake pedal inside and very little from the firewall to the steering box

Borgeson makes a complete P/S set up ,not power assist as the 54 Mercury was from the factory, as someons said , they all leaked, the Borgeson set up gives you a real P/S box, pump.and bracket and pulleys, you cut the shaft and install a rag joint
