Default Henry Ford funeral home

Went to the Detroit auto show on Sunday. Decided to stop by the funeral home (Hamilton) that embalmed Edsel, Henry and Clara Ford. Hamilton is still in the funeral business but they no longer own that building. It was an art studio for a while and is now abandoned. A homeless person was camping on the steps and their belongings are scattered and covered with snow. The last photo is the church (St. Paul Cathedral) where Henry and Clara's funeral's were held.

How sad but unfortunately many areas in and around Detroit look like that. The place has deteriorated beyond belief. There are areas I don't even like driving through in day light hours. Wayne

What a shame to let a classic old building go to ruin.
A lot of people in this country need to visit Germany and see how to care for buildings and the land.

Is much of this problem due to the financial situation occurring in Detroit?

The current financial situation is adding fuel to an already fire out of control. This rot has been going on for many years. Thousands of derelect buildings have become a haven for drug trafficking, prostitution and organized crime. Once a proud city is now a disgrace. I am glad I am 50 miles away. Wayne

The financial situation, which is due to economic and development decisions. There is a new book out about Detroit and looks at its history and decline. I have not read it, but the author is a good one and a native of Detroit.

From what I hear, Germany is about the size of Montana so it is far smaller to maintain, with less urban sprawl and denser population than us. I am sure you describe it correctly, but, to tread on thin ice, I suspect the explanation is grounded mainly in their societal structure that differs vastly from ours.

Don't forget WWII and that the country was rebuilt by us through the Marshall Plan.

Remember much of the financial problems had to do with criminal activity at city hall which resulted in criminal convictions. Wayne

I don't want to be the one to get this thread removed, but really, these buildings are abandoned due to the relentless, vicious crime situation in the area-it has nothing to do with sprawl or the size of the country, but everything to do with demographics.

I was born & grew up in Detroit. Moved to the Burbs in 1966 when I was 22. Always makes me sad when I see it now & remember what it was.

I have to be careful in saying this, the reason is changing demographics in Detroit and suburbs. Most of Detroit is one big ghetto and suburbs too.

I was born and somewhat raised in Livonia, Michigan. When I go back there for visits I am truly amazed at how things have changed for the worse.

Henry Ford was the first dead man I saw, my dad took me to the Museum at Green Field Village to see him laid out in 1947 when I was 7.

I remember it being a long S shaped line to walk by the casket.

Great story!!! Just finished reading "The Last Days of Henry Ford" and it describes the same picture. Pretty neat that you were there. Did your dad point out any family members?

My dad lived in Detroit, worked at the Rouge, Cadillac and Lee Plaza Hotel in 1950. My brother and I took him back to see Lee Plaza maybe 5 years ago. It used to be one of the swankiest places to live in Detroit and now it's gutted.
