putting gas tank hose on filler neck
the gas tank hose between gas tank neck and gas tank is tight fit, by design. I've been trying to fit the hose to the gas tank neck but it has been unsuccessful. I've tried heating the hose in hot water but .......
what do you suggest? thank you, fordman duplicate pic is unnecessary |

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
That looks like 37 to 40 pipe.
I had the same problem they sell the wrong hose. Its a size that's not common any more for automobiles. I went to a boat building store and had to buy 12" length for gas or diesel. |

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
you need some sort of lubrication, some thing not harmful to rubber, a thin coating of anti freeze (100%) on the inside of hose, and every thing has to be in a straight line, if just a little off you may never get it to start

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
I had the same problem on my '48 Merc. I finally took a pair of in and out calipers and measured the pipe o.d. and the hose i.d. There is no way they would fit. I contacted the Old Ford Distributor and they took the Chinese hose back and sent me another one. Although a tight fit, I liberally applied vasaline to the i.d. of the hose and the od of the pipe and with some groaning and grunting it went on.

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
Liquid hand soap or dish washing soap always makes a good lubricant on hoses and such.

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
I used a silicone lubricant. some hoses being sold are the wrong I.D. . I put a new one on my 51 Merc several years ago. forgot who I got it from, but it would not fit. I ended up using one that was for a Ford p/u. I think it was for a 56. not sure though. Jim

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
I just replaced the hose on my 39. Napa had the right size. Don't use water hose as it will get soft and swell. I put aviation gasket cement on to help it slip and seal. If you have some gas tank sealant I would give it several coats inside to keep the fuel away from the rubber. G.M.

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
I found a piece of that 12" length I bought at the Boat store gas and diesel.
Its 1 7/8" I remember having to deal with the fender rubber and wrong hose. You get the right size you have no problem. |

Never Vaseline on rubber. Bad things can happen.

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
I still have not been able to get the 1-3/4 inch hose on the gas filler to tank.
My town does not have any gasoline hose 1-7/8 inch. Does anybody know where I can purchase 4 inches of gasoline hose 1-7/8 inch diameter? fordman |

Re: putting gas tank hose on filler neck
The correct size is 1 7/8"
There is a raised surface on end so it doesn't pull off. The tube is 1 7/8" it has to expand to fit over end. 1 3/4" is just to small. I was not happy and got the right size. I remember well the gas tank was made wrong bottom. The fix was to remove body to remove tank. The 3 bolts were wrong caged nuts to small, bolt rolled thread. This was about 10 years ago now. There is just to much money to lose to admit there is a problem. Just a casual observer. |
