Rear brake return spring just flopping around
There is a spring on the outside of the backing plate on each side for the emergency brake. It looks kinda like the pic attached but is straight on the ends. They are just hanging on the arm an I see no way to attach them or ground them so they will put pressure on the arm. I'm not sure if they are broken or what.

Yes, that is what it looks like where does the straight part rest?

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
This isn't a very good picture, but does show the spring and the end looped around the arm. The straight end rests against the support shaft for the service brake. The next time I'm at the Gilmore, that would be a good chance to get a picture of the top side showing the other end of the spring.

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
I just did my Tudoor this weekend using the Additional Instructions from the Snyder's online catalog for the springs. It took me about 30 minutes to do both sides using the instructions provided after I made the tools.

To make matters worse there are some poor reproductions on the market. I have encountered some that were too short. Tom Endy |

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
I found it simple to just use a loop of twine to pull the spring back and over the arm, then just pulled out the string. only takes a minute each side.

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
I used one of these. Still not an easy task, and certainly took me longer than a minute each side. Both of my springs were broken, so didn't have much opportunity to see how they are suppose to go. Fortunately, the new springs were marked "Left" & "Right".

If you were working in the River Rouge plant when your car was made, how fast do you suppose you had to do this task

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
Okay got it done - it is quite the challenge, I used a flexible wire cable with a loop at the end, pliers and screw drivers - thanks for the tips

Re: Rear brake return spring just flopping around
I am replacing broken springs and the bands. I was trying to hook the spring before I had the lever on the shaft and the bolt inserted. Bad idea! Thanks for these tips.
