Pretty wild. Looks like they used it also for more counter weight. Plus the hydromatic and the 4 speed combo

have been there too. Well worth the stop! Those guys back then used whatever they had to get the job. Everyone of them was truly an engineer in their own right.

Looks like that solves the problem of incompatible bellhousing to transmission bolt paterns.

I'd guess a log skidder. It would be easier to steer once a load was being pulled.

Re: How (not!) to put a caddy flathead in a 38/39 truck
Thinking of all the different ways flatheads were used:
I was given two engines: The first was an 8BA with a Merc crank that was used to run a moving stairway in a warehouse in Oakland, CA. The engine just idled all day and had a governor of sorts that added power when a load (MAN) was on the lift. It was taken out of service when the engine needed an overhaul. The second was an engine that had sat in the forest up in a place called Challenge, CA. for 27 years. It was mounted on an International truck and ran the boom for lifting logs. The owner had drained the engine cooling system and left it there. Turned out to be a great engine that I gave to a friend. Flatheads found many uses Jim |

Re: How (not!) to put a caddy flathead in a 38/39 truck
Hi Everyone, Okay I'm just not getting it.
When I first looked, I thought the engine added (on the right) would be used for some kind of purpose other than moving the truck, like a water pump or winch. And the engine on the left was just torn-down. But the one on the left has no cooling, spark, or fuel systems. Hmmm. But it looks like the output of the added engine is running into the crankshaft snout of the engine on the left. So that would make it driving the running gear of the vehicle. I guess as long as the left engine only had a crank in it, it may work. But just WHY? Is my question. Can somebody please explain what I'm seeing. Stuff I did notice: some railroad rails are used in there; it looks like there are cables and a roller to raise the boom.

Two sets of reduction gears. The Ford tranny and the HydraMatic in series. I assume the pistons were removed from the flathead.

Re: How (not!) to put a caddy flathead in a 38/39 truck
If the Ford engine has the stripped crankshaft the vibration would be earth-shaking. The Caddy engine would be needed to hold the wheels to the roads.

I would imagine it was only ever run at low speeds.

Re: How (not!) to put a caddy flathead in a 38/39 truck
Hi Everyone, I guess I should read more carefully. I see skidmarks had it when he first mentioned the Caddy's transmission.
Thanks SuperDave for the help!

You have to give them an A+ for being ingenious. Crude, but it probably did the job they built it for. Can you imagine the condition of springs and shocks on the front of that baby.
