It needs to be perfectly aligned to go together, both angularly, and up and down and side to side. Don't forget the shaft must be rotated to get the splines in angular alignment.
When putting the motor in my 33 I had the inspection cover off and was able to put a long pointed bar through the hole and push the splines around until they finally aligned and slipped in. Shine a good light down there so You can really see what is going on.

Mart.

I’m Probly getting paranoid now but after Marts look in tranny window idea, the spline doesn’t seem to get past the bevel on the front of the thrust Spline. Can Someone confirm dimension on ‘39 tranny to clutch spline major diam is 1.375 minus a couple? I should of compared My actual tranny spline dimension w the busted one I used as the alignment tool but didn’t and don’t wanna pull engine to check

Loosened tranny mounts & must have given enough extra play & spline finally meshed! Also opening window on back of tranny helped big time as I could see the spline when aligned, Thx Mart! Whew, made me work !

That's great news Anthony. Do a little write up and post it on Fordbarn for folks who may need the info. When situations like that occur, I always say, "Wait a minute, I can't be the only person ever confronted with this problem. Therefore, it's solvable."
