'49 F1 back on the road!
Took the '49 F1 out for its maiden voyage on the road today as its new owner. had 3 generations of us in the cab. My Dad, me and my son.
goes and stops really well. Has a bit of a death shake when you hit a bump in the road. tierod ends and swing arm are tight. pretty sure its the steering box. I had already adjusted it as far as it would go. looking like a rebuild for that. still needs an exhaust, was just running some straight pipe off the headers have some Smittys glass packs for it. Has a brand new engine thanks to Walt Dupont. This truck was last on the road about 14 years ago. I'm going to get it in tip top shape mechanically and run the wheels off it for now. |

If you're ever down in the Hartford, Ct. area, I have some used engine pipes for a V8 and a extra muffler (new) and also a couple of NOSR tailpipes here. I also have a few frame hangers for the exhaust.

Always a happy day when you can put on road miles while creating some new family history. Enjoy the journey.

I'm in the same boat here's a 1950 my father bought new not restored just kept up.
The death wobble; if you have good king pins, tight box, drag, tie rod ends, I probably would look into especially rear spring hangers. Most like spring sag have them re arched that effects the geometry .. |

Check the bushings in your front springs. They could be worn out, and have a slop in them.

HI Christ. I'd put my money on the caster on the front axel, might have to put tapered shim under front spring perch to tip axel back. The book will tell you what caster should be. Walt

Re: '49 F1 back on the road!
I will check all that. Thank you. There is 3-4 inches of play in the steering wheel before the tires move. It will need a rebuild regardless. Rebuild kits aren't cheap. Wow!

Re: '49 F1 back on the road!
Went for another test ride today. Completely different truck than the last test drive. Rebuilt steering box, new king pins and bushings, new front spring pins and bushings, and all new tires. No death wobble! This truck now drives almost as good as my 2014 truck. I know someone is going to give me heck but I put Radial tubeless 225/75R16 on back and 215/70R16 on front on the original rims. Gives it a nice rake forward and looks good. I sealed up the rivet holes on the outside of the rims with POR. They don't leak a bit. Look forward to driving this truck ALOT more.

Re: '49 F1 back on the road!
I've always wondered about the "rides like a truck" reference, my 49 rides great as well.
