Default Exhaust Manifold gaskets?

Other engines I have worked on do not use any gasket between the cast iron exhaust manifold and the block or cylinder head. What did Ford do from the factory with the flatheads? I have manifolds machined flat, and ports look good too. If gaskets are supposed to be used, what are the best type? Are there solid copper ones, for example? Thanks!

Ford flatheads used exhaust manifold gaskets.
I use 2 gaskets on each exhaust port. If you do a Fordbarn search on engine gaskets and head gaskets lots of info. will appear.

Even though I have a 6x48 abrasive belt machine and always surface my manifolds, I am a firm believer in the Remflex exhaust manifold gaskets. They are made from graphite and are 1/8" thick and good for something like 3000 degrees. They are relatively soft and wil squish and conform even when surfaces are not perfect. I have them on my model A, my FHV8s and my landcruiser six.

On my engine test stand I coated the gaskets with copper antiseize since they get removed often. Seems to be working, they come off clean and can be reused.

Not to hi jack this thread, but to add options, I have these gaskets from Speedway. They appear to be a composite sandwiched between thin metal sides. Are they for exhaust to block or exhaust to manifold pipe?

40cpe They look like they are made from the same material as their SBC exhaust manifold gaskets?

Another vote for Remflex. I have gotten away with no gaskets on my FE engines when using cast iron heads and cast manifolds, when everything is surfaced flat, but I'll admit to never having tried it on a flathead. When I use headers, I used the Remflex and they have worked great for long periods of time.

If everything is surfaced, I wouldn't be afraid to try no gaskets. It'd be easy enough to loosen the manifolds up and slide gaskets in, if needed.

I looked up the part number on the package, says "Fits '32-'53 flathead exhaust ports"

Another option for the OP.

I am using the speedway composite manifold gaskets. They work ok and are reusable.

My Napa store has gotten them for me and I'm sure I have gotten them from amazon as well. In the old days I simply called Remflex in the tiny, remote town of Mineral Washington.
